Like All National Institute of Technology, NIT Kurukshetra (National Institute of Technology Kurukshetra), also known as NIT Surat, is a public technical university of national importance. It is formally recognized by the parliamentary act in 2002; therefore, it is also a deemed university by virtue of the act. NIT Kurukshetra, from time to time, has successfully produced students who have gained fame in their walks of life. Established in 1963 as a Regional Engineering College, the institute presently houses as many as 3600 UG students and 1200 post-graduate students.
Presently there are 31 National institutes of technology in the nation with plans of new ones coming up soon. Therefore, NIT Kurukshetra is a part of these 31 institutes. Thus most of the syllabus and curriculum are similar and approved by AICTE. Moreover, the college also offers Ph.D. Programs. The campus area is 300 acres of lush greenery amidst building blocks—the campus houses from small to big requirements for the students. Facilities like a library, hostel, sports arena canteen, medicals, etc., are available on the campus. A green campus with ample spaces and amenities makes the environment airy and likable by the students and staff. Moreover, the campus is located in the urban area of Mirzapur, Haryana, which makes it highly accessible not only for the public but also for students. To reach the campus, one can easily reach the Kurukshetra railway station located 6 kilometers away from the campus from the railway station; a bus or cab will do the job.
The institute provides as many as 51 courses for UG, PG, and Ph.D. levels. The courses are as per AICTE. Sum total of 13 departments offer courses across five major disciplines of study, namely applied sciences, engineering, technology, humanities, and Management studies. Popular courses in UG levels are B.tech in Computer science and B.tech in Information technology. Additionally, the college also provides courses in management studies, namely MBA and MCA. Six-year Ph.D. programs are also available at the campus. Furthermore, course fees will range anywhere between 1.8 lacs to 6 lacs or more depending on the course.
The dedicated placement cells make sure that students get placed in top-class organizations. Amazon was among the constant recruiters at NIT Kurukshetra in 2019; the highest package offered at NIT Kurukshetra stood at 40.63 lacs, and in 2020, it jumped to 43.31 lacs. A joint collaboration of the government of Punjab and the Government of India resulted in the establishment of NIT Kurukshetra in 1963. Like all 14 old NIT’s, NIT Kurukshetra was also known as a Regional Engineering College (REC).In 2002 that the status of NIT was conferred to the institute along with its counterparts. After becoming NIT, the institute automatically became an institute of national importance and a deemed University. The institute started functioning on its present campus in 1965. The first batch of students was in the field of B.Sc. (Engg.) Degree in Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering. The institute admitted 120 students in its first batch. In 2006 the college introduced an MBA program with an intake capacity of 60students.
Infrastructure at NIT Kurukshetra is up to the national standard of NIT. From research facilities for students to interactive classes, NIT Kurukshetra is not shy of basic and advanced facilities. In 1965 when the college moved to its permanent campus, the library came into existence. Since the library has amassed numerous collections of books journals and papers and CDs. Presently a total number of books the library are 53189 additionally the library also caters as many as 10928 e-books, 832 DVD’s and many more documents and study materials. Sum total of 600 readers can utilize the library reading area at a time. The library also has a book bank from where students can borrow books for entire semesters. The library digitally connects to e- Sodh Sindhu and subscribes to many foreign and national journals.
The computer center works as the backbone of the internet facility throughout the campus.
The healthcare facility available at NIT Kurukshetra can be called a mini-hospital coupled with an OPD department, and dental care unit, a pathological lab, a pharmacy, an X-Ray facility, an ECG facility, an 8-bed casualty triage for emergency purposes, and ambulances for an emergency.
A sum total of twelve hostels are available at NIT Kurukshetra. Out of these nine hostels, three are for girls and nine for boys. Furthermore, the boy’s hostel is further divided into two categories three boys hostels are triple sharing, and the rest six are single room hostels. The three Girls’ hostel has a capacity of housing around 610 girls. Furthermore, the Hostels come with basic facilities like WI-FI reading space, recreational space, and canteens.
Students get easy access to different playing grounds and courts. Playgrounds for Cricket, football, and Hockey are available. Additionally, courts for Basketball, badminton, tennis, and volleyball are also available in the camps, providing ample opportunity for the students to keep engaged in physical activities. Furthermore, the college also organizes two annual fests known as Techspardha and Confluence.
