List of Courses in India: Undergraduate, Post-Graduate & Doctoral Programs

The Indian subcontinent has a rich history of higher education which starts with Nalanda University in 500 CE. It was once a hub for pupils from China, Korea and Central Asia. The modern academic scene in India began around 1820 with the British missionary schools and the oldest college in India, The Presidency College founded in 1817. The English Education Act 1835 laid the solid foundation and structure of modern education in India. Wood’s Dispatch in 1854 and William Hunter’s report in 1883 further improved upon the act of 1835. Following this, a wide network of institutions grew across India based on the Western academic pattern. Presently India houses many quality academic institutes, these include 23 IITs, 200 IIMs, 31 NITs and 19 AIIMS. Besides these, there are many good places to study that offer a variety of degree courses.

In this article, we look at various degree courses across India which might help you in deciding which of the degree courses to pursue and where depending upon your choice. India follows a 10+2 pattern for higher education. So you need to have completed class 12th or equivalent for enrolling in UG degree courses, and admission to PG and PhD degree courses require UG and PG in respective fields.

UG/Bachelor’s Degree Courses in India

After you complete 10+2 in any of the streams (arts/commerce/science) from a state or national board the next step is any of the UG degree courses. This plays as your entry point in the field. As a UG student, you will acquire all the essential skills of your field. The duration of UG courses varies from 3 years for BA/BCom to 5 years in some cases such as BALLB/MBBS. In the case of professional UG degree courses like BTech/BE, BVSc the duration of the UG program is 4 years. Whereas MBBS, BArch and BALLB need a minimum of 5 years for completion of the degree. After these UG courses, you are good to start a career in respective fields with nice paying jobs. Other UG degree courses mostly require 3 years of study.

With the introduction of the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) the duration of UG courses will be 4 years but with multiple exit points during the course. In the present scene, you have to complete the prescribed period of study to get the degree. As per NEP 2020, you will get a certificate if you quit after one year of study and a diploma if you quit after 2 years. Completing 3 years of course study will entitle you to a UG degree. But completing all 4 years will earn you a 4 year multidisciplinary UG degree. All these exit points leave you with different levels of expertise in your respective fields, so you will have the option and flexibility in deciding your career path. This will also promote many inter-disciplinary modes of study which until now were limited.

Undergraduate Education Structure

UG courses in Indian Universities may be based on a yearly or semester system. In a yearly system, your evaluation is based on exams held on a yearly basis. Whereas in the semester system the evaluation is based upon exams held on a semester basis. A whole year takes up two semesters, so the exams in the semester take place twice a year in the semester system. In the first year of UG students are usually made to brush up on what they learned in senior secondary school along with some additional knowledge at a nominal pace. Things start getting a little more serious in the Second year where more advanced topics are introduced, and the final year is normally when you get to choose the topic you’d like to specialize in.

In the final year of a professional course, doing an internship may be compulsory, this is to get you familiar and experienced in the industry. So, by the time you complete UG degree course, you have enough knowledge of the subject matter so as to make a choice if you wish to pursue Post graduation in the same topic or try switching to something new.

PG/Master’s Degree Courses in India

After you have completed UG and feel like studying further, then the next step is Post-graduation. PG degree courses equip you with more advanced knowledge of the subject matter than a UG course. After completing this you will be ready to perform research or go for a job as per your choice. Most people pursuing a professional career will find that PG suits their purpose and is all they need. Some PG (like M.Sc.) programs require you to have done UG in the respective field whereas others are more liberal in admitting students (like MBA). Admissions to PG programs across India are made on merit in UG as well as performance in some entrance tests. Many universities provide scholarships to support pursuing higher studies, especially in professional courses where the program fee can be very high. Nowadays candidates with PG are preferred for many positions in professional posts.

Postgraduate Education Structure

Postgraduate courses in India usually have a duration of 2 years across all disciplines with some exceptions like in MCA whose duration is 3 years. Like UG, PG courses can also be yearly or semester-based. PG degree courses focus on details of the subject matter which are left unaddressed in a UG course. The second year of PG course is usually dedicated to research work. The NEP 2020 plans to make PG courses a 1-year matter if the student has completed 4 years of UG study.
