Importance of DSC in e-commerce and online transactions

Digital signatures aid in the security of online transactions. It builds the trust of buyers and sellers in e-commerce. It also aids in providing proof of the legitimacy of any transaction.

Working Principles of DSC

Below are some of the working principles of DSC.

Encryption and Decryption Process

Encryption in DSC generates a key pair consisting of a public and private key. Therefore, the same data can only be decrypted with the signer’s public key.

Use of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI)

PKI is a way of making sure that important information sent over the internet is secure and can be trusted. It is like having a secret code only the intended recipient can understand.

Certificate Authority and Digital Certificates

To verify the identity of an entity DSCs are issued by trusted parties. These are known as certificate authorities. The digital certificate serves two functions.

  •  Verifying the owner
  • Making the owner’s public key available

Benefits of DSC

Online digital signatures provide many benefits.

Enhancing Security and Trust

Signers identify themselves while signing. It can give evidence of electronic documents’ origin, identity, and status. It also gives details on transactions and digital messages. This serves as a reliable form of identification.

Ensuring Data Integrity

Digitally signed documents cannot be changed or updated after signing. Thus it makes the data safe and secure. Government agencies request these certifications to cross-check and verify commercial transactions.

Industries and Applications of DSC

Below are the applications of DSC in different industries.

Government and legal sectors

They specify that DSC can be used to verify electronic records. In the government and legal sectors, where important documents are exchanged daily, DSCs add an extra layer of security and trust. Also, DSC has been used in these sectors through an asymmetric crypto scheme. Legal sectors also used hash functions for electronic record verification.

Banking and Financial Institutions

The Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) verifies identification. It also offers high security for online transactions. DSC protects the absolute anonymity of the information transferred through it.

Healthcare and Medical Records

In the healthcare industry, these are used to increase treatment efficiency. It has also been used in administrative operations and processing hospital admissions.

Types of DSC

Below are the different types of DSC discussed.

Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 certificates

  • Class 1: Class 1 certificates will show the information in the subscriber’s application. It is consistent with the information in well-known consumer databases.
  • Class 2: Class 2 Digital Signature Certificates are used for Income Tax. It is also used for Registrar of Companies and VAT filings.
