Principles of Management across various fields

Henri Fayol is also known as the ‘Father of Modern Management Theory. He introduced general principles of management that can be implemented at every level of management. The fourteen principles of management given by Henri Fayol are as below.

Division of work

It is a practice in which specific work is set for an individual or a group of people. Division of labour leads to the specialization that increases efficiency, increasing productivity.

Balancing authority and responsibility

According to Henri Fayol, there should be a balance between authority (power) and responsibility (duties).

Discipline: Principles of management

It means to respect and abide by the rules and regulations of the organization. Everyone working towards the company or organization’s growth must strictly follow the rules and regulations. One needs sound discipline, good supervision, and impartial judgment to attain this.

Unity of command

This management principle says that an employee or a subordinate must receive orders from the manager only. A subordinate should seek and report only one superior preventing dual subordination.

Unity of direction

All the activities with the same objective must be conducted under one head with only one plan. This is the principle of unity of direction.

Subordination of individual interests to the general interest

The interest of a single person or a small group of people should not encompass the general interest of the organization. In other words, the general interest of the organization should be more important than individual interest. Otherwise, the company or organization may collapse due to differences in interest fields.

Remuneration: Principles of management

It is the salary of the employee or firm for service. Fair allotting of salary is crucial for the employee to give his full devotion. This includes both financial and non-financial incentives. If an organization wants efficient employees and best performance, then it should have a good remuneration policy.

Centralization

The organization’s authority is concentrated in only a few heads. On the other hand, the authority is distributed in different levels of management in the case of decentralization. No company or organization can be completely centralized or decentralized. There is always a balance between centralization and decentralization depending upon the organization.

Scalar chain

The chain of command is usually depicted on an organization chart, which identifies the superior and subordinate relationships in the organizational structure.

Order

There should be an order of doing everything at the place and by the right person. Order for things is ‘Material Order’, and order for people is ‘Social Order’. Social order refers to selecting the ‘right man at the right place’.

Equity: Principles of management

The principle of equity means that the manager must be kind to his subordinates. In addition, he must be fair and just towards each subordinate. Equity is a combination of justice and kindness. It creates loyalty and devotion in the employee towards the company or organization.

Stability of tenure of personnel

As we know that every person needs time to learn and grow. So is the case with employees. They need time to learn and settle into their jobs. For this reason, the employees must have job security because insecurity leads to inefficiency. Usually, A successful organization has a stable group of employees.

Initiative

All levels of staff should be given the freedom to start an initiative. In simple words, this principle means creating an environment so that the employees are encouraged to make their plans and execute them.

Esprit De Corps: Principles of management

It means ‘Team Spirit’. Hence, the management should create unity, cooperation and team spirit. The organization must avoid a divide and rule policy at any level or any point to sustain success.

Principles of Management: Human Resource Management

Before we begin our discussions about the principles of human resource management, let us understand an overview of that. It deals with real people and gets the best out of them.

Principle of individual growth

It is the responsibility of the HR department to put the employees to their maximum working capacity. They have to make sure that the employees receive an equal and non-partial working environment. This will improve the company’s satisfaction and hence bring growth to the company.

Principle of right selection

Nevertheless, recruitment is the fundamental responsibility of the HR department. They should ensure that they hire the most suitable person for any position. Otherwise, all other human resource principles fail.

Principle of allowing equal participation

Every employee must feel a sense of importance. It means the employees must feel that they have a voice in the company. This automatically boosts the performance and skills of the employee. Thereby improving the overall growth of the company.

Principle of fair pay: Principles of management

Just as we have seen in the remuneration section in principles of management given by Henri Fayol, it is the same here. The employee’s salary should be fair according to their work and role in the company. Otherwise, the efficiency of the employee decreases drastically.

Principles of incentives

The HR department reviews the employees’ performance and regularly rewards them based on their performance.

Principle of dignity of labour

This is amongst the fundamental principles of management. Each employee must receive respect and dignity regardless of caste, gender, etc.

Labour management: Principles of management

In addition, the HR department is responsible for adhering to labour laws and regulations. They must also be ready to make decisions in situations of breach of these rules and regulations.

Principle of teamwork

The HR department has to motivate and promote mutual respect among the employees. To achieve it, they have to conduct regular sessions of team-building workshops. This helps in setting a goal and inculcating a feeling of team spirit.

Principle of national prosperity

To simplify, we know that when a business does well, the economy does well. Finally, society benefits at large. So, the seed starts at the HR department. They contribute to national prosperity.

In conclusion, all the principles of human resource management emphasize the important steps that any organization or company must follow to grow and succeed.

Principles of Management: Waste Management

It refers to all the activities/actions required to manage waste from its point of production until its disposal. This includes the collection, transport, treatment and disposal of waste while monitoring and regulating the waste management process. This process is very important for the environment as it helps to reduce the effect of waste on health and our surroundings. It reduces the effect of toxic waste on the environment and human health. A huge amount of waste is generated each day alone due to human activities. According to research, approximately 2 Billion tonnes of municipal waste is generated worldwide every year! This is a huge amount of waste and is indeed hazardous to living beings on the surface of the Earth. The basic principles of waste management are:

Polluter pays

It is a common practice in which the one who produces the waste has to bear the cost of managing it to minimize the harmful effects on human health. In other words, the polluter has to pay for the appropriate disposal of unrecoverable material. For instance, a factory that produces toxic gases or chemicals as a by-product of its activities is generally responsible for its safe disposal.

Resource efficiency

This means utilizing the naturally available resources on the Earth effectively while minimizing the impact on the environment. Generally, humanity extracts more resources to produce goods than our planet can replenish. So, resource efficiency is the understanding of reducing environmental impact from the production of goods.

Life cycle of a product: Principles of management

It reflects on the lifespan of a product. In other words, the time period for which the product remains useful. Have you ever wondered what happens to an empty bottle of shampoo or an empty bottle of soft drink that has been discarded? It becomes a waste product as it has no utility anymore.

Waste management hierarchy

According to Wikipedia, waste hierarchy is a tool used to evaluate processes that protect the environment alongside resource and energy consumption from most favourable to least favourable actions. It indicates the priority order for action to reduce and manage waste.

Circular economy

It aims to redefine growth. It deals with global challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, waste and pollution. In short, a circular economy employs reuse, sharing, repair, recycling, remanufacturing and refurbishment to create a loop by minimizing the use of resource inputs and the creation of waste.

Waste management is an important issue that the government should strictly implement. However, we as individuals can do little to save our planet from further damage. We can practice RRR, that is, Recycling, Reuse and Reduce.

Principles of Marketing Management

To sustain in a competitive environment, the marketing manager must be familiar with the changing needs of the consumers. We will discuss some basic principles of marketing management for the present scenario.

Principle of control

It is the measurement and correction of the subordinate to make sure that the company achieves its goals.

Principle of motivation

Humans need motivation at each point in life. So the marketing manager has to link the interests and needs of the subordinates with their task and reward them for their work regularly.

Sales promotion/advertising: Principles of marketing management

Sales promotions include free samples, bonuses, coupons, giveaways, etc. These help the marketing manager create a spike in demand for the product.

Principles of consumer’s satisfaction

It is the economic principle of marketing management. It can be done by achieving customer’s satisfaction. Therefore, the marketing manager has to consider the change in price or quality of a product and how they react towards it.
