IIT Roorkee (Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee) officially established as an IIT in India, previously was a university and before becoming a university it was an engineering college. IIT Roorkee Campus

IIT Roorkee presently has three campuses. The main campus is in Roorkee and the other two campuses are in Saharanpur and Noida. While the Saharanpur campus which teaches courses in process engineering, Paper technology, packaging technology, and polymer sciences sits an on-campus area of 25 acres. The UG courses at the university have an intake capacity of 1222 seats with 27 courses available. The institute offers courses for, B.Arch, M.Arch, PG Diploma, MBA, and Ph.D. Fees for the UG program range up to 11 lac for an entire course and for integrated 3+2 courses fee goes up to 14 lac. Furthermore, 28 specializations for masters in or M.E are available and for UG 22 specializations are available.

History of the IIT Roorkee

There are colleges that are old and carry a rich history and then there is IIT Roorkee. IIT Roorkee is more than 150 years old which makes it not only older than independent India but also the first Independent Engineering University of free India. Presently the college is around 30 years shy of completing its 200-year celebration. IIT Roorkee earlier was called Roorkee college since its establishment in 1847, during British Raj, however, the name was soon changed to Thomson engineering college in 1854. Thereafter its name got another revision in 1949 In free India. And finally, in 2007 the Government of India (GOI) made the college into an IIT. The Mahatma Gandhi Central Library at IIT Roorkee does justice to the name of the Father of the nation as the library has a humongous and essential collection of documents. The library is moreover fully temperature controllable and can house as many as 500 readers at one go. The main campus has sum total of 16 Hostels, these hostels are further available separate for Boys, Girls, Married Persons, and Co-ed. Out of the 16 Hostels, two are entirely for girls one co-ed hostel, nine for married, foreign nationals, and Ph.D. students while the remaining hostels are for boys.


The institute has numerous clubs, chapters, and student bodies that actively participate and organizes events of different capacitates. Moreover, the institute holds its own annual events Cognizance, Thomson, and Sangram which are technical festival, annual cultural day, and annual sports day respectively.
