Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IRAI) is often called Pusa Institute. It is because of the history of the Institute. In other words, the institute was earlier in Pusa Bihar and now in Pusa, Delhi. The institute from its formative days has developed and contributed to the development of the country by large. Moreover, the institute is now a premier learning center in the field of Agriculture it has now. It 20 divisions 5 multi-disciplinary Centres situated in Delhi, 8 regional stations, 2 off-season nurseries, 3 All India coordinated research projects with headquarters at IARI, and 10 national Centres functioning under the all-India coordinated research projects.
India when compared to developed nations by and large lacks infrastructure of production and management in the field of Agriculture. IARI is a catalyst and a bridge gaping the disabilities in the field of Agriculture. Therefore the institute’s mission is to revolutionize basic frontiers be it for quality or quantity of production or for infrastructure implementation in the fields. Furthermore, the institute finds its objectives to be a research-based driver in fostering and forming optimal methods of agriculture.
Furthermore, the university has many regional extension centers which are to serve as links between the institute and small village farmers. Additionally, the institute has a quite decorative list of notable alumni. To name a few Dr. M. S. Swaminathan (Padma Vibhushan), Dr. A. B. Joshi (Padma Shir), Dr. R. S. Paroda (Padma Bhushan) among others.
The campus is located in Pusa Delhi, spreading over 1250 acres the campus houses not only the institute but also the Indian Agricultural Statistical institute which is a part of IARI. Moreover, the campus houses numerous facilities like spotting grounds, hostels, staff quarters, departmental, administrative, and academics blocks. The campus is located at Pusa New Delhi. Moreover, the campus is highly accessible as Pusa Delhi is adjacent to areas like Karol Bagh, Naraina, etc. Reaching the campus should not be a hassle as plenty of options are available both for regional locals and national students.
IARI offers courses in the Master (PG) and Doctoral (Ph.D.) levels only. The courses available at the master’s level are M.Tech. in Agricultural Engineering, M.Tech in Post food harvest technology, M.tech in Bioinformatics, M.Tech in Genetics, M.Tech in Water Science and Technology. Moreover, courses are available in M.Sc. and MCA. The M.Sc. program has 18 specializations on offer. Namely few are M.Sc in Biotechnology and M.Sc. in Horticulture. Furthermore, the Ph.D. degree has 26 specializations to choose from.
The institute has an active placement cell that takes care of placement activities. The placement invites companies to recruit students during the placement season. It furthermore, publishes brochures to inform visiting companies about students profile. In past, the students have secured placements in companies and organizations like Central Banks of India, Food Corporation of India, Indian Forest Service, Indian Economic Service, ITC, Mankind, and Growponics among many other companies.
Mr. Henry Phipps a prominent American businessman who had the second-largest share in America’s giant steel company Carnegie Steel made a wholesome donation of 30000 British pounds for the formation of a college in the field of Agriculture. The institute thus was established with the said donation. It was named Agriculture research Institute when established in 1905. Though the institute was actually set up in Bihar, it has to be moved to Delhi in 1936 due to an earthquake that destroyed the institute. Presently the institute has more than 20 disciplines available, however, in its initial days, it started with just disciplines in core agriculture, Mycology, and cattle breeding.
After Moving to Delhi the institute post-independence was renamed to Indian Agriculture Research Institute. Furthermore, the institute has since established itself as the prime contributor in the field of agriculture. Moreover, the institute is credited for the creation of resistant variants of Wheat 1950. Finally, in 1958 the institute received the status of deemed University from UGC. It is also worth noting that the 70’s green revolution is the fruit of research at IARI.
Infrastructure directly in one glance shows the capability of a college. Proper infrastructure coupled with adequate staff and teaching faculty is the o to the requirement for a student. Moreover, quality education and holistic learning are achievable through the ample availability of infrastructure and facilities. Colleges with proper infrastructure contribute directly and indirectly to the overall development of a graduate. The infrastructure available at the institute is as follows.
The Library is literally as big as it gets. Speaking of volumes the library houses 1,32,000 books 2,21,600 journals 15,160 postgraduate theses. Furthermore, the total collection of documents stands at 375000+. Moreover, services like references, book acquisitions, book loans are available at the library. Furthermore, the library houses computers and has internet connectivity as well. The library uses OPAC cataloging and has digital resources available as well. It has also worked with World Bank to digitalize many agro documents.
The institute actively organizes and takes part in numerous sports events. Therefore facilities for Cricket, Football, Volleyball, and other outdoor sports are available. Moreover, facilities for indoor sports like chess, carrom and table tennis are also available in each hostel. Furthermore, the institute also keeps the students fit and actively organizes free yoga sessions.
The institute has sum total of seven hostels available to its students. Hostels are separate for boys, girls, and married students. Five hostels are for boys and one each for married students and girls. The hostels have facilities like proper furnishing and clean water available as well. Moreover, facilities like a saloon, book shops, indoor gaming rooms, and recreational space are also available. The mess serves food at minimal and reasonable rates the mess food is simple and hygienic.
To get admission to any of the programs one must be clear with the eligibility criteria. For Masters’s program, one needs to have a bachelor’s degree and meet minimum eligibility criteria. For the Ph.D. program, one is required to clear the required master’s degree and meet the criteria. Upon meeting the criteria applying to secure admission is basic. The past placement status as per the brochure available shows promising companies to take part in the 2013-14 placement season. The institute does have a placement cell. However, the exact data of placements and salaries are not available.
