  • A Two-Tier System Emerges (2000): In the year 2000, a new approach was introduced: a screening test followed by a main exam. Only the top 20,000 scorers on the screening test were allowed to attempt the main JEE.
  • Towards a Single Exam (2005): By 2005, a committee comprised of directors from all IITs proposed significant changes. Their vision? A single, objective exam replacing the two-tier system. Additionally, a new minimum eligibility requirement was established – candidates now needed at least 60% marks in their Class 12 board exams to qualify for the JEE.
  • The Common Entrance Exam (2012): The year 2012 saw another twist in the JEE story. Following discussions with state education ministers, a common entrance exam for admission to all national engineering institutes, including the prestigious IITs, NITs, and IISERs, was proposed.
  • ISET Enters, Then Exits (2012): Briefly christened the Indian Science Engineering Eligibility Test (ISET), this proposed common exam generated a lot of speculation. However, these plans were soon shelved.
  • The JEE We Know Today: Since 2013, the JEE has maintained its core structure, with the Joint Entrance Examination – Main (JEE Main) acting as a screening test for the prestigious Joint Entrance Examination – Advanced (JEE Advanced) required for IIT admissions. While the basic format remains constant, the difficulty level and question styles can vary from year to year. Eligibility Criteria for JEE        

Eligibility Criteria for JEE Mains and Advance are as mentioned below:    

For mains, the interested candidates must qualify the eligibility criteria mentioned below:

  • Educational Qualification: To be eligible for the JEE exam, interested candidates must have completed their 12th or equivalent examination from a recognized board or university.
  • Compulsory Subjects: Candidates must have studied Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as mandatory subjects in their 10+2 or equivalent examination.
  • Age criteria: No age limit laid down by NTA to appear for JEE Main. Any student who has passed the 12th class or its equivalent exam within the past two years or will appear in the current year can apply for the entrance exam irrespective of age.

For JEE advance, the interested candidates must meet the eligibility criteria mentioned below.

The JEE Advanced eligibility criteria are based on the JEE Main scores. Only a limited number of top-ranking JEE Main applicants are eligible to take JEE Advanced. These candidates need to meet the additional eligibility criteria set by the conducting authority of JEE Advanced.

  • Age criteria: For JEE Advance 2023, students must have been born on or after October 1, 1998. There is a five-year age relaxation for S.C., S.T., and PwD candidates; these candidates must have been born on or after October 1, 1993.
  • Qualification: A candidate must have taken the Class XII (or equivalent) test the year before or be scheduled to take the exam this year with Chemistry, Physics, and Maths as their main subjects.
  • Number of attempts: A candidate can take a maximum of 2 attempts in 2 consecutive years.
