Freshers tend to express a common concern and have the notion about Interviews being scary, even if they know the answer to something they are fretting anyways. This dilemma of being stuck on what to answer for which interview question just makes them uptight and they end up stuttering or fumbling. This situation makes them lose confidence in themselves and they seldom give up on things that might have been for them.

Now, many people fret when it comes to giving interviews because there is no absolute way to gauge or predict what questions would be asked. But trust me, an interview is not that onerous, it is just a matter of basic preparation so you don’t have to worry much.

Preparing for and facing interviews is quite simple if you do it right and there isn’t much learning that goes behind it. You just have to be thorough with the mainstream questions and possibilities.

What are your strengths?

Their main aim to ask such questions is to know how well you understand yourself. With this question, the interviewer assesses whether you have the right qualities for the job or not. This a basic interview question and answer procedure, which especially involves this question. This is a basic interview question and answer asked everywhere.

What should you do: This is the best chance to sell yourself. You can pick three or four strengths you possess that are relevant to that particular job and elucidate with examples wherever necessary.

Answer:  I am a keen observer of my surroundings. This gives me a slight edge over others in understanding the situation and the people present. This helps me greatly in understanding what my next move should be and how I can best attack on to my audience.

What do you identify as points of weakness in you?

Another one of the most common interview questions, this one aims directly to understand how your drawbacks may impact the company. Everyone has flaws, even the interviewers know that. What they are looking for here is how you use your weakness to either turn it into a strength or how you are working on it to improve yourself.

What should you do: You should be careful while answering this question and not pick any generic weakness that may display very less about your character. Remember, here the interviewer is still trying to understand you. You must tred carefully here and answer smartly.

Now most importantly state your weaknesses and thoroughly explain how you are working to solve them. Else you should choose a weakness which is not that in line to the job.

Answer: Though this answer must be personal and varied with different job performances, but one answer you can give is, “I feel I am not the best at managing my time. My biggest weakness is that I get too involved in a task and then in a bid to see it to completion to the best of my abilities, I spend more time than required. However, I am beginning to understand that deadlines are more important as I am merely a part of a large chain of events. A lag on my side impacts the larger scheme of things.

Why do you want this job?

The aim of this particular interview question is to assess how serious you, the candidate are in seeking employment with a company. Also, the interviewer wants to know how familiar you are with their company’s mission, values, and culture. And do you believe you will be a good fit for the organization? Remember this while facing interviews.

What should you do: Whatever you say should tell the interviewer about much you respect longevity and how this job fits like a glove with your long-term career goals.

Answer: You could answer, “Your company has always inspired me every since I dreamed of joining this line of work. The way you manage relationships with consumers attracted me initially to learn more about you. And the more I learned, the more I admired the working of your company.”

Can you give us a picture of where you would want to be in the near future?

The interviewer’s job is to know about your career goals and where your applied position fits into it. They want to see how you will try to grow within the organization. Thus, they ask this question to simply see your future with their company.

What should you do: It’s better to answer the question in a generic manner without giving in much detail. Paraphrase what this job will do for your career and why you are interested in working with a particular organization. And don’t be so candid and naïve enough to say this “In your Position!”

Answer: You can say something like “I see myself having learned valuable insights and practices from my mentors. I feel I am too young to see myself at some executive position, but I will work hard to focus on finding a mentor who I can learn from the most”.

Can you let us know why you quit/are planning to quit your current job?

The interviewer will certainly ask this question so be prepared for it. The answer will convey a lot about your character and how you act professionally.  This is not a time to speak badly about your former boss, no matter how bad he/she was. In this way, the company is trying to understand your maturity of dealing with change and your decision-making skills.

What should you do: The best way to tackle this question liken this is to say that are seeking better opportunities. If you were let go of your previous job or fired from the place, its always better to come out clean. List your reasons in a mature way and I am sure the interviewees will understand.

Answer: “ I feel that I had saturated my opportunities at my current job. I felt that I needed to explore more in order to grow. That’s how I heard of your company and the various opportunities it provides to the employees to learn and develop their skills.”

I see some breaks in your jobs, could you tell us why and what you did during those times?

What should you do: Gaps in employment are not uncommon. A lot of people take them for different reasons. Either for developing a certain skill, or some might even take it as a break for the family. Some might even have been forced into a break after they have been fired. It is always good to be honest and come clean about the reasons. However, it is always needed that you provide them with an understanding of how you used the break to your advantage.

Answer: Yes, I had taken some time off to be with my newborn child. He just turned one year old and I wanted to help my wife take care of the child. However, the break proved to be very good for me. I was able to catch up on my technical skills and did various courses like Google Marketing online in order to stay updated.

What makes you unique?

This is just an extension of the earlier asked question about your strengths. If you have already been asked a question about your strengths, then asking this question is basically a way to get a specific answer out of you related to this job. This question is usually asked like this “why should we hire you?” The answer will help the interviewer to contemplate your approach and compare what you can bring to the table in relation to others.

What should you do: The first pen down your strengths and connect them to the requirements listed in the job advert.

Answer: I believe that everybody is unique. Everybody will give you a unique way to shine from the crowd. My uniqueness is just that. The ability to shine. I will make conscious effort to come to the front to take responsibility and tasks to show my true dedication.

Can you give us an understanding of how your previous manager wanted you to improve?

This is an extension of the weakness question. By asking these questions the interviewer wants to know what others perceive about you.

What should you do: Try your best to recollect your performance reviews and mention what they said, also talk about the steps you took to address your weaknesses. Keeping it real is important, but you should refrain from mentioning any major flaws that could imperil your chances of making it through the interview.

Answer:  “I was managing to maintain all the tasks that were assigned to me. However, a thing my boss always told me to work on were my interpersonal skills. I am shy by nature and find it a little tough to mingle with the crowd. But, I worked on this tirelessly. I have been trying to engage more in team building activities”.

Share about something that you did and take pride in

The interviewer will get to know what drives you after you answer this question. Also, your suitability for the job, professional values, and how can you make yourself useful for the organization.

This is a very popular interview question and answers for freshers, and it is asked almost everywhere.

What should you do: It is best to stick with a professional answer. Provide numbers wherever possible because this is the language that interviewers love and tend to understand.

Answer: “I am extremely proud of my achievement at a project I did with my current company. As a sales junior, I was able to add 10 new clients to the portfolio at the company which was the single highest number added in a quarter”.

Share a time when you made an error in your life

This is amongst the toughest interview questions as you are being asked to elucidate a specific instance of your failure. It is a behavior-based question in disguise that will give the interviewer an insight into your personality and what kind of mistakes you are prone to making. It will show how you handle failure and if you are capable of learning from it. Remember this while facing interviews.

What should you do: Answer authentically and refrain from highlighting the ugly truth. Be certain to mention what you have learned from the experience.

Answer: “I had missed out on an important chain of command and tried to make a decision without informing my boss. That severely impacted the progress of the task at hand and forced us to apologize to the client for our late delivery. But this made me understand the need for hierarchy, that every part in the puzzle is there for an important reason”.
