Job Description
Rigorous chemical reasoning at the research level is one of the harder problems for AI systems to get right. Chegg is seeking chemistry professionals to evaluate AI-generated mechanisms and advanced problem-solving, write publication-quality reference solutions, and expose precisely where AI chemical reasoning breaks down. This is frontier-adjacent work spanning organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry — fully remote, asynchronous, and highly specialized.
Core Responsibilities
- Evaluate AI-generated reaction mechanisms and solutions across advanced organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry for rigor, correctness, and logical completeness
- Write publication-quality reference mechanisms and solutions with correct arrow-pushing, stereochemistry, quantitative calculations, and airtight chemical reasoning that AI models learn from
- Identify mechanism errors, incorrect stoichiometry, misapplied chemical principles, or hidden unstated assumptions in AI-generated content, tagging the specific error category
- Compare and rank multiple AI-generated mechanisms or solutions to the same problem, explaining which reflects superior rigor, correctness, and chemical insight
- Where relevant, verify AI-generated spectroscopic interpretations (NMR, IR, MS) or computational chemistry outputs for accuracy and internal consistency
- Construct advanced problem sets and research-level challenges that probe the limits of current AI reasoning about chemical structure and reactivity
- Contribute to rubric design — defining scoring criteria such as rigor, correctness, logical completeness, and chemical insight — used to benchmark AI chemistry reasoning at scale
- Complete asynchronous task batches independently — no scheduled calls or fixed hours required
Key Qualifications
- Master’s degree or PhD in Chemistry or a closely related quantitative field (or equivalent recognized qualification); relevant experience is a plus — postgraduate and doctoral graduates welcome
- Strong command across core areas of advanced chemistry — organic reaction mechanisms, inorganic structure and bonding, physical chemistry, or analytical methods
- Able to write and critique rigorous chemical mechanisms and calculations with correct notation, complete structure, and precise reasoning
- Sharp eye for subtle mechanism errors, stoichiometric inconsistencies, or misapplied chemical principles — can detect and explain flawed reasoning in plain English
- Self-directed; capable of sustained independent focus on demanding, research-level problems
Nice to Have
- Hands-on experience with spectroscopic interpretation (NMR, IR, MS) at an advanced level
- Proficiency with computational chemistry software such as Gaussian, ORCA, or Spartan
- Familiarity with ChemDraw or other chemical structure-drawing software
- Published research or graduate teaching experience in a chemistry subfield
- Familiarity with LaTeX for technical typesetting
Why Chegg
- Fully remote and flexible — no fixed schedule
- Task-based commitment, typically 10–40 hours per week
- Real-world challenges with direct impact on AI accuracy and safety
- Pathway to ongoing projects for high-quality contributors
