First Indian Movie Nominated for Oscar

The first-ever Indian film to be nominated for an Oscar was Mother India. Mehboob Khan directed the film, which was released in 1957. The main character in the movie, played by Nargis Dutt, depicts the hardships faced by a struggling rural Indian family. The movie depicts the relationship between a mother and her sons, highlighting everything that she would take to make sure they were safe.

Mother India was a work of art and a movie that depicted the social issues of the day. It illustrated the class inequality in India, the exploitation of farmers, and the value of education. Critics praised the film for its superb direction, exciting story, and talented acting.

The movie was directed by Mehboob Khan and starred Rajendra Kumar, Sunil Dutt, and Nargis as the primary characters. it is about an Indian woman Radha, who struggles to protect her family and property against all obstacles.

The movie gained recognition and popularity after being nominated for a 1958 Oscar for the Best Foreign Language Film category.

First Indian to win an Oscar

Bhanu Athaiya became the first to win an Oscar (Academy Award) in 1983 in the list of Indian oscar winners for designing costumes. Bhanu is an Indian costume designer and painter. She received an Academy Award for the category  “Best Costume Design” for her work on the 1982 film “Gandhi”. She had a couple of works in the 1953 Progressive Artists’ Group exhibition in Bombay. With Indian directors such as Raj Kapoor, Guru Dutt, B.R. Chopra, Yash Chopra, Vijay Anand, Ashutosh Gowariker, Raj Khosla, and others, she collaborated on over 90 films. She collaborated on international projects with filmmakers such as Richard Attenborough for the movie Gandhi (1982) and Conrad Rooks for the movie Siddhartha (1972).

Bhanu Athaiya was an inspiring woman. She was a costume designer who rose to prominence in the 50s and 60s Indian cinema business. She rose to fame as an Indian costume designer thanks to her work in films like Lagaan, Brahmachari, Amrapali, and Guide.

This inspiring woman was born in Kolhapur, Maharashtra in 1929. She received her official schooling and training as an artist in Bombay. Later, she enrolled in the J. J. School of Art in 1947 and studied fine arts there.

Athaiya was also a fashion trendsetter in India, bringing a sophisticated and contemporary look that had never been seen before. She conducted experiments with novel materials and textiles, improving the comfort of traditional clothing such as sarees. Young designers from India and other countries found inspiration in her.

After suffering a brain tumor diagnosis, Athaiya passed away in October 2020 at the age of 91.

1. Salaam Bombay is a movie directed by Mira Nair in the year 1999.   This stunning  movie Salaam Bombay, which portrayed life in Mumbai’s streets and slums, was able to garner international recognition and win an Oscar.
2. The movie narrates the tale of Krishna, a little boy who lives in Mumbai, a busy and energetic city. He hopes to build a better future for himself and wants to remove all the struggles and difficulties he has encountered in life. However, Krishna finds himself entangled in a web of hopelessness, abuse, and poverty, suggesting that fate has other ideas.

Gandhi (1982)

Ben Kingsley’s portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi in this Richard Attenborough-directed biographical movie received eight Oscars at the 55th Academy Awards, including the categories of  Golden Globe awards, Best Actor, Best Picture, and Best Director.

Lagaan (2001)

Lagaan, an epic historical sports drama, made history by being the first-ever Indian film to receive a nomination at the 74th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The film won a place on the international scene and won over the viewers with its tragic depiction of British colonial control in India and the rural beauty of a village cricket story.

Slumdog Millionaire (2008)

1. At the 81st Academy Awards, this Indian movie garnered eight nominations and took home eight prizes, including Best Director and  Best Picture awards. The movie, regarded as a masterpiece, introduced Indian cinema to a global audience. This 2009 film received eight Academy Awards, including the category Best Picture, and captured the harsh reality of living in India’s slums. The film also won hearts worldwide. This film generated the most talk even after the awards ceremony was over.
2. The writer and director of the movie are  Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy. The movie portrays the story of an 18-year-old tea server from Mumbai slums named Jamal Malik (played by Dev Patel), who wins the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

The Elephant Whisperers (2023)

1. The Elephant Whisperer’ premiered on  Netflix, directed by Kartiki Gonsalves and Guneet Monga, and took home the Best Documentary Short Film Oscar at the 95th Academy Awards, earning the first Oscar of 2023 for India.
2. This  Oscar-winning documentary, The Elephant Whisperers, chronicles the lives of people who have made it their purpose to understand and interact with elephants.

RRR (2023)

RRR is destined for recognition worldwide because of its exceptional ensemble, striking cinematography, and moving narrative. This year (2023), the movie took Indian cinema to another level by receiving an Indian Oscar Winner. At the 95th Academy Awards, Naatu Naatu, a song from the movie RRR, directed by  SS Rajamouli, won an Oscar for Best Original Song.
