Bhanu Athaiya became the first to win an Oscar (Academy Award) in 1983 in the list of Indian oscar winners for designing costumes. Bhanu is an Indian costume designer and painter. She received an Academy Award for the category “Best Costume Design” for her work on the 1982 film “Gandhi”. She had a couple of works in the 1953 Progressive Artists’ Group exhibition in Bombay. With Indian directors such as Raj Kapoor, Guru Dutt, B.R. Chopra, Yash Chopra, Vijay Anand, Ashutosh Gowariker, Raj Khosla, and others, she collaborated on over 90 films. She collaborated on international projects with filmmakers such as Richard Attenborough for the movie Gandhi (1982) and Conrad Rooks for the movie Siddhartha (1972).
Bhanu Athaiya was an inspiring woman. She was a costume designer who rose to prominence in the 50s and 60s Indian cinema business. She rose to fame as an Indian costume designer thanks to her work in films like Lagaan, Brahmachari, Amrapali, and Guide.
This inspiring woman was born in Kolhapur, Maharashtra in 1929. She received her official schooling and training as an artist in Bombay. Later, she enrolled in the J. J. School of Art in 1947 and studied fine arts there.
Athaiya was also a fashion trendsetter in India, bringing a sophisticated and contemporary look that had never been seen before. She conducted experiments with novel materials and textiles, improving the comfort of traditional clothing such as sarees. Young designers from India and other countries found inspiration in her.
After suffering a brain tumor diagnosis, Athaiya passed away in October 2020 at the age of 91.
