Rigorous mathematical reasoning at the research level is one of the hardest problems for AI systems to get right. Chegg is seeking mathematics professionals to evaluate AI-generated proofs and advanced problem-solving, write publication-quality reference solutions, and expose precisely where AI mathematical reasoning breaks down. This is frontier-adjacent work spanning pure and applied mathematics — fully remote, asynchronous, and highly specialized.
Core Responsibilities
- Evaluate AI-generated proofs and solutions across advanced pure and applied mathematics — algebra, real analysis, topology, combinatorics, and mathematical logic — for rigor, correctness, and logical completeness
- Write publication-quality reference proofs and solutions with correct notation, complete derivation steps, and airtight logical structure that AI models learn from
- Identify logical gaps, invalid proof steps, misapplied theorems, or hidden unstated assumptions in AI-generated mathematical content, tagging the specific error category
- Compare and rank multiple AI-generated proofs or solutions to the same problem, explaining which reflects superior rigor, correctness, and elegance
- Where relevant, translate informal proofs into verified code using Lean 4 or a comparable proof assistant, and evaluate whether AI-generated formalizations are logically sound
- Construct advanced problem sets and formalization challenges that probe the limits of current AI and automated reasoning tools
- Contribute to rubric design — defining scoring criteria such as rigor, correctness, logical completeness, and elegance — used to benchmark AI mathematical reasoning at scale
- Complete asynchronous task batches independently — no scheduled calls or fixed hours required
Key Qualifications
- Master’s degree or PhD in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Logic, or a closely related quantitative field (or equivalent recognized qualification); relevant experience is a plus — postgraduate and doctoral graduates welcome
- Strong command across core areas of advanced pure mathematics — algebra, real analysis, topology, combinatorics, or mathematical logic
- Able to write and critique rigorous mathematical proofs with correct notation, complete logical structure, and precise derivation flow
- Sharp eye for subtle logical or notational gaps — can detect and explain flawed reasoning in plain English
- Self-directed; capable of sustained independent focus on demanding, research-level problems
Nice to Have
- Hands-on experience with Lean 4 or a comparable interactive proof assistant such as Coq, Isabelle/HOL, or Agda
- Active contributions to Mathlib or other large-scale formalization projects
- Proficiency with Mathematica, MATLAB, or Python (SymPy/NumPy) for computational and symbolic mathematics
- Published research, graduate teaching experience, or olympiad/contest coaching background in mathematics
- Familiarity with LaTeX and formal mathematical typesetting
