Exhalation: Stories (2019) by Ted Chiang

It is a short story collection rather than a novel,  Each story presents a deeply philosophical dilemma wrapped in a thought-provoking sci-fi premise. One of the standout stories, "The Merchant and the Alchemist's Gate," examines time travel through the lens of a fable, where a merchant discovers a portal that allows him to visit both the past and the future.
