From Constable to Commissioner: What Each Police Rank Really Means in India

India’s police force is structured in a strict hierarchy. Each rank has distinct duties, powers, and responsibilities in maintaining law and order.

1

Constable: The Backbone

Constables are the entry-level officers. They handle patrolling, traffic control, and assist in investigations. They are the face of the police on the streets.

2

Head Constable: The First Promotion

A step above constables, head constables supervise junior staff and assist sub-inspectors in investigations and administrative tasks.

3

Sub-Inspector (SI): Investigation Begins

SIs can file charge sheets and lead investigations. They often head police stations in rural areas and are key to law enforcement.

4

Inspector: Station In-Charge

Inspectors manage entire police stations in urban areas. They oversee investigations, staff, and maintain law and order in their jurisdiction.

5

Deputy SP / ACP: Gazetted Officer

Appointed through State PSC or promoted, DSPs/ACPs supervise multiple stations and report to higher command. They are Class I officers.

6

SP / DCP: District CommanderEmpathy

Superintendents of Police (SPs) or Deputy Commissioners (DCPs) head entire districts. They coordinate major operations and policy enforcement.

7

Commissioner / DGP: The Top Brass

Commissioners (in metros) and DGPs (state heads) are the highest-ranking officers. They shape policing strategy and oversee thousands of personnel.
