The University Board was established in January 1840, with Mr. George Norton as its President. After a 14-year hiatus, the Government of India devised a systematic educational program for India in 1854, and the University was formed on September 5, 1857, by an Act of the Legislative Council of India.

Madras University is the mother of virtually all of South India’s ancient universities. In recent years, the University’s authority has been limited to three districts in Tamil Nadu.
