Established in 2004, Tumkur University is an autonomous not-for-profit interdisciplinary public institution of higher education. Earlier, Tumkur University was a part of the University of Bangalore. However, Bangalore University wasn’t able to fulfill the educational needs of the students of the Tumkur district. For this reason, the Karnataka Government made the firm decision to carve out a separate university from the University of Bangalore. Consequently, Tumkur University was formed via the Karnataka State Universities Act, 2000. On the contrary, the Act was passed in 2000, but Tumkur University was established four years later, that is, in 2004. On the whole, Tumkur University’s history relates to reaching out to the disadvantaged rural students of the Tumkur district.
