It was founded in 1962 to service the then-Punjab state. On July 8, 1963, it was opened by Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, India’s PM. A Parliament Act established Punjab Agricultural University in February 1970. HP Krishi Vishvavidyalaya was founded on the Palampur campus in July 1970. Also The College of Veterinary Sciences in Ludhiana was renamed Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Science University in 2006.Moreover Land grant institutions in the USA were used as a model. Has been instrumental in raising food manufacture in Punjab and ushering in India’s Green Revolution era. Has contributed significantly to the state’s cattle and poultry output. In 1995, it was renown India’s Best Agricultural University.
Food output increased from 3.2 million tonnes in 1960-61 to 26.8 million tonnes in 2014-15, thanks to dramatic improvements in food grain productivity. It also resulted in a significant increase in the state’s farmer revenue. Certainly, University experts’ cutting-edge studies in apiculture and mushrooms resulted in a dramatic boost in production. The state currently generates 37% of the country’s total honey and 50% of the country’s total mushroom production. The PAU also has been in charge of large-scale reclamation of salty and sodic soils in the state (6 lakh acres), thus making them suitable for crop production. Moreover, PAU produced over 69,000 quintals of enhanced seed in 2015-16, in addition to 3.18 lakh seedlings of fruit plants and 1.65 lakh seedlings of forest trees, as part of its commitment to providing excellent seed to farmers for increased productivity.

Farmers are also served by the university through 14 Farmers’ Advisory Service Centres (FASCs) located in the following districts: Abohar (Fazilka), Amritsar, Bathinda, Faridkot, Ferozepur, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Noor Mahal (Jalandhar), Kapurthala, Tarntaran, Ropar, Patiala, Barnala, Sangrur, and Chandigarh.
