The Government of Karnataka established the Karnataka State Open University to promote distance learning in the state. It was established in 1996 and is located in Mysore, Karnataka. The University Grants Commission has approved the university and offers both Distance and Open Learning programs. KSOU offers courses in UG, PG, Diploma, and Ph.D. levels.
The Karnataka State Open University has 29 departments in total and the Distance Education Council has also approved the institution. The university offers multiple courses with different specializations as well. Some of the most popular courses are MSc in Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science, MBA, MA in Economics and English, B.Com among many others.

Karnataka State Open University campus is located in Mysore, is in the University of Mysore. The campus is called the Manasagangotri campus. Additionally, the entire campus spreads across 36 acres of land. Moreover, it is only 5km away from the city center on the Mysore-Mangalore highway.
The KSOU headquarters has various facilities available, there are administrative blocks, academic blocks, cottages, library, lecture halls, and many others. Additionally, the campus offers other basic amenities like a banking facility, canteen, and post office.
Bachelors: Karnataka State Open University offers BA in Kannada, Hindi, and English. The candidates applying for this program should have an aggregate of 50%. KSOU also offers B.Com and BLIS. All the UG programs are for a duration of three years.
Masters: KSOU offers M.A for a duration of two years with a variety of specializations. Some of them include Journalism and Mass Communication, Ancient History and Archaeology, Public Administration, Sociology, Political Science, Economics, History, Urdu, Sanskrit, Hindi, English, and Kannada.
The university also offers M.Sc with specializations in Psychology, Physics, Microbiology, Mathematics, Information Science, Geography, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry.
KSOU offers MBA for two years as well, the candidate should have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline from a recognized institution.
Ph.D.: All the Ph.D. courses are for a duration of three years. The university offers specializations in Sanskrit, Telugu, Sociology, Kannada, Management Studies, History, Hindi, English, and Education.
Admissions for all the courses are based on merit. The Karnataka State Open University does not conduct any entrance exam. Additionally, the university also offers scholarships to students. They offer Post-Matric Scholarships which cover the course and hostel fees. Moreover, KSOU also offers a defense scholarship for students who come from families with an Army background.
The students can avail themselves of the scholarships by following certain norms and rules. Moreover, for the Post Matric Scholarship, the students should belong to the ST or SC category with an annual income between 2- 10 Lakhs. Additionally, they also have to submit their Bonafide certificate, caste certificate, and income certificate.
Bachelors: The first-year fee for B.Ed is INR 20,500. For B.Com and B.A, the first-year fees are INR 4,700. Moreover, for Bachelors’s in Library and Information, the total fees are INR 7,100.
Masters: The first-year fees for MBA are INR 18,500 and for M.A, the fee is INR 9,900. Additionally, for Diploma and PG Diploma courses, the total fees are INR 6,400. However, this may vary in accordance with the specializations and programs under it.

Karnataka State Open University was initially an Institute of Correspondence Course and Continuing Education. This was a wing of the Mysore University. However, the State Government of Karnataka established the university formally through the Karnataka State Open University Act of 1992.
Karnataka State Open University has an extensive library with a large collection of books and journals. The library also has subscriptions to various magazines and newspapers, it is usually open from 10 to 5 pm.
Additionally, the university has an IT center. The students can also access e-books and e-journals with the help of Wi-Fi on campus.
Karnataka State Open University also has a canteen that provides hygienic and healthy food to the students and other faculty members. The canteen provides meals at a very affordable price as well.
Additionally, KSOU has a proper Guest House for any guests visiting the campus. Most of the time, the guest house is for counselors, guest lecturers, and other academicians. The guest house is located on the North-West side of the campus and it has a very good ambiance which also provides a safe and comfortable environment as well.
Karnataka State Open University has a Skill Development Centre for the students who are preparing for various competitive examinations. The university also offers accommodation facilities to the students who are preparing for the examinations.
Apart from the hostel facilities, the university also has a few cottages on the campus. These cottages are limited in number and it provides accommodation for students who visit the campus for the university examination or Contact Programmes.

The predecessor of the Karnataka State Open University was the correspondence courses and the continuing education school of the University of Mysore. KSOU was established on June 1, 1996.
