Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) is one of the oldest universities in the country. It was established in the year 1995. It is present in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The objective of the Institute is to conduct a multi-disciplinary analysis on growth issues. This covers economic policies, oil policies, and environmental policies. IGIDR has been dedicated to teaching and research excellence since it was founded in 1987. It is a state-of-the-art research institute created by the Reserve Bank of India to conduct multi-disciplinary research on development issues. It was then known as a university. The Institute’s study agenda is governed by policy issues, the research priorities of particular faculty members, and sponsor programs. However, science needs to be strengthen and diversify to meet changing needs. While the right to choose research topics remains for independent researchers, the boundaries of information need to be broader so that the new challenges can be met.
The paradigm shifts in growth strategy resulting in globalization have brought numerous reforms to macroeconomic policies. The effect of systemic and cyclical factors on survival and prosperity must also be better understood. Shocks are on the rise as a result of globalization. Four ‘F’s are the most recent examples: fruit, gasoline, fertilizer, and financial shocks. There is also the need for more concerns on human growth, social aspects of globalization, social welfare and insurance, gender, natural resources management, climate change, livelihoods, water, biotechnology.
In this sense, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh indicated that IGIDR should also concentrate on issues concerning monetary, water, and climate change. Learning is an important part of the Institute’s business for a deemed university. The IGIDR was a very successful teaching program. MSc, M.Phil, and Ph.D. students have positions in renowned companies and banks, and colleges. It mirrors the consistency of IGIDR’s education. As Dr. Jalan’s committee has said, however, the instruction, instructional methods, faculty stimuli, etc., must be in reconsideration.
The courses provided by the University are
The Ph.D. program is available to include academic analysts and experts capable of carrying out policy analyses from a quantitative and interdisciplinary viewpoint on national and international economic and development problems. Whilst encouraging an interdisciplinary approach, the program, in its efforts to solve numerous sustainability challenges, places some greater focus on the economy. Doctoral researchers is necessary, within four years of entering the Institute, to apply for their doctorates. Both the M.Phil. And Ph.D. programs entail satisfactory completion of the work and the thesis.
