The Indian Institute of Technology Patna, also known as IIT Patna or IIT P, was established in the Year 2008 by an act of parliament. Kapil Sibal laid the foundation stone for the permanent campus in early 2011, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the campus in the year 2015. The college is located in a rural setting at Bitha, Bihar. Over the years, the college has produced successful students from varied backgrounds in Engineering. Furthermore, students from the college have secured placements in fortune 500 companies over time in prime roles and departments.

More about the university

The college has its own incubator center, a research center with different labs that allows exploration in the field of engineering and applied sciences. Moreover, IIT P also actively conducts workshops on varied fields of study for the students.


A 501-acre campus sits in the lap of nature at Amrah Bitha, Bihar. Students from all parts of India enroll and get to enjoy the tiresome yet awesome campus life at IIP-P. The campus has state-of-the-art facilities available, from a canteen, sports arenas to ample free spaces for running, walking, and whatnot. Moreover, the campus is divided into many blocks for easier functionality and workings of the institute. The campus at IIT P houses its library, hostel, departments, and other functionaries of the institute.

The campus is around 40 km away from Patna City one can take a Bus or hire a cab to reach IIT P. However, the nearest and most convenient choice of transport can be the railway since Bitha railway station is just 2km away from IIT Patna.

Courses and Programs

IIT Patna offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs primarily. Students need to appear for JEE advance and GATE for admission into the primary courses. In addition to UG and PG, IIT P also offers courses on M.Sc and Ph.D. The Courses offered at the UG level are in computer science and engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil and environmental engineering, chemical engineering, and lastly in metallurgical and materials engineering. Sum total of nine courses is offered at the PG level. Likewise, some of the PG courses are M. tech in mathematics and computing, M.Tech in Nanotechnology, etc.

Courses fees for UG programs are around 800k and for PG around 400k. For the PhD and M.Sc course, fees are comparatively low and hardly rise above 25k.


With scores of big companies flocking at IIT P, every year placements are not a tough thing to figure out for eligible students. IIT P average packages for UG students range anywhere between 13 lac to 14 lac. The highest placements packages have even crossed the 50 lacs mark. Though all these figures can be exciting, it is also important to know out of 188 participating students, 159 students secured a job at the placements in 2020.

History of the Indian Institute of Technology Patna

IIT Patna was set up by an Act of Parliament on August 6, 2008. The institute has since then functioned on the 10-acre premises of Naveen Government Polytechnic. A sum total of 501 acres of Land was mandated towards the development of IIT Patna’s permanent campus. The foundation stone was laid by Shri Kapil Sibal in 2011 3 years after IIT Patna’s conceptualization. In 2015 the campus opened its arms for students from various parts of the country. The institute has since then produced students who have secured the best places in the Industry. In 2018 lately, the institute also opened a permanent building for its incubation programs. The first graduating batch of 2012 witnessed the privilege of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam awarding the degrees.

Student Activities & welfares

Student welfare through different co-curricular activities helps students from brain drain and keeps students active and cheerful. Thus the institute has many clubs, from core technical clubs like robotics to fun and games club-like dance and music club. Therefore the students from different societies of the institute also get an opportunity to participate in annual fests and functions.


The Central Library at IIT Patna is state of the art with the availability of facilities like OPAC and self-check-in using RFID. Moreover, the library has everything with resources like books -books, thesis, dissertation, journals, and e-journals. In addition to all these facilities, the library also provides access to video lectures.

Hostel & Canteen

The institute has separate hostels set in a clean environment. Two hostels are presently available for boys and one separate for Girls. Additionally, a hostel for married students is available on campus as well. Moreover, each hostel has its own gym, mess, and recreational area. Additionally, students also get access to in house canteen and Amul parlor at the campus for food options.


Playgrounds and playing courts for the following outdoor sports are available cricket, football, basketball, tennis, and badminton. Moreover, indoor spaces for chess, carom and other indoor games are also available. Furthermore, the institute also organizes annual sports events and participates in inter-college sports. Therefore all the sports club also gets related opportunities.

Incubators and Research

In 2015 IIT amplified its own incubation center. The incubation center is well funded by different government organizations students with excellent start-up plans get the opportunity to utilize the incubation spaces for offices and other related works. The incubator program also adds wings to its next-gen CEO by providing them support and funding opportunities. Likewise, Research labs are chemistry lab, bioscience research lab, materials research lab, and chromatography lab.
