IIT Dharwad started functioning in July 2016 in Dharwad, Karnataka. The University offers full-time education with a total of 9 courses and 170 seats. In the 1990s S.R. Bommai, the late Human Resources Development Minister, moved the proposal of having an IIT Dharwad, to the Centre. Moreover, in 1998 a proposal was also sent by the ISRO chairman and space scientist Udupi Ramachandra Rao recommending the construction of the Indian Institute of Technology in Dharwad.
