Now as you’re here to gather insightful information about the top universities of India, we’re sharing some important details about them below. We hope when you’re finished reading this article, you’ll be well informed to make a wise decision.

Types of Universities in India

There are 4 types of universities in India – central, state, private and deemed universities. In addition to this, there are also some institutes of national importance. Read along to discover more about each.

Every university in India is recognised by one or the other bodies of the government. For example, the University Grants Commission (UGC) is a government body that supports the colleges and universities recognised by the government. Basically, all the top universities in India are recognised by the UGC.

Central Universities

A central university is one that has been established by an Act of Parliament. There are 54 central universities in India. Out of these, at least 40 are centrally funded by UGC and fall under the purview of the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). The rest of the universities are directly financed by the Government of India and enjoy an autonomous status. To put it plainly, central universities enjoy the power to award their own degrees, however, they aren’t permitted to grant their affiliation to colleges.

Some of the top Central Universities in India are Jawaharlal Nehru University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Banaras Hindu University, and the like. These also happen to be some of the top universities in India.

Total No. of Central Universities in India: 54

 Why Choose Central Universities?

Budget and fundings are never an issue for these Central Universities. As new VCs, well versed with the importance of holistic development, are taking over, the Central Universities are expected to offer nothing but the best. From MBA and B.Tech to Pharma and PhD programs, there’s no course you won’t find here. A lot of Central Universities fall within the bracket of the top Universities in India.

State Universities

State Universities are public universities that are established through an act of the legislative assembly of the state. They are managed by the State Government and fall under the scope of the University Grants Commission (UGC). It is the responsibility of the State to arrange and distribute funds to these universities to enable them to prosper and make their way amongst the top universities of India.

There are 437 State Universities in India. Out of these, 256 fall under Section 12 (B) of the UGC Act. This means that these 256 colleges are declared fit to receive central assistance. Akin to the Central Universities, the Governor of the respective state acts as the ‘Visitor’ of the State Universities. The Universities of Madras, Mumbai and Calcutta are the oldest State Universities of India. They are also counted amongst the top universities in India.

Total No. of State Universities in India: 437

Why Choose State Universities?

While there are plenty of things that you’ll consider before zeroing down on a university, affordability and quality of education will hold extreme importance. And that’s exactly why State Universities take the cake. The best part about them is that their fee is affordable as compared to the private universities. A lot of them are also the top universities in India. Some of the top State Universities in India include the University of Mumbai, the University of Calcutta, Delhi Technological University, and the like.

Deemed-to-be-Universities

There are some Institutes of Higher Education that are not Universities. However, owing to the high calibre of learning experience that they offer, they are declared as Institutions ‘Deemed-to-be-Universities’. This is done by the Central Government, on the advice of the UGC, because these Institutes work at a very high standard in their respective areas of education. This status is conferred in accordance with Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. The top universities in India mostly fall in this category.

Total No. of Deemed-to-be-Universities in India: 126

Why Choose Deemed to be Universities?

There may be several criteria that any Institute needs to follow in order to be a Deemed-to-be-University, such as NAAC and/or NBA accreditation for 3 consecutive cycles, etc. Nevertheless, this status comes with several benefits. The Institutes get full freedom in drafting their own course work and syllabus. They are also permitted to set their own admission guidelines, fee structure and instructions for the students.

Back in 2019, the University Grants Commission issued a notice on orders of the Supreme Court for 123 Deemed-to-be-Universities, asking them to drop the word ‘University’ from their name. This notice took the media by storm as several esteemed institutions were on this list, including IISc Bangalore, BIT Mesra, IIFT Delhi, and the like. These are among the top 10 Deemed Universities in India.

Private Universities

Private Universities are those which are recognised by the University Grants Commission and are funded by private bodies. In simple words, these universities are financed by corporate entities framed by educationists and/or private individuals who feel strongly about education. Some of the top universities in India fall under this category.

Private Universities were not as common during the early 2000s. Reports suggest that before 2005, India had only as many as 20 of these Universities. Rajasthan has the maximum number of Private Universities in India – total 41 in number. BITS Pilani, Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT University), Lovely Professional University, Amity University, are some of the top Private Universities in India.

Total No. of Private Universities in India: 388

Why Choose Private Universities?

In the past few years, India has seen the establishment of innumerable Private Universities in states like Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, etc. In order to prove their mettle, every University has striven to provide the best learning environment with top-class amenities to the students. A lot of these Universities, in fact, provide facilities that are no less than a five-star hotel. Of course, all of this is offered along with quality education and a holistic learning experience that makes them one of the top universities in India. However, all these amenities come at a cost that is much higher than the fees of Public Universities.

Institutes of National Importance (INIs)

There are different types of Universities in India; one of the lesser-known terms is that of the Institutes of National Importance. These are the Institutions that play an important role in the arenas of science and education. These include some of the top Universities in India such as IITs, IIMs, NITs, AIIMS, and the like. They have a lot of autonomy in terms of laying guidelines for admissions and setting up the syllabus.

Total No. of Institutes of National Importance in India: 161

Why Choose Institutes of National Importance?

  • These Universities provide a world-class learning environment and most of them are responsible for raising the standards of the Indian education system
  • Since they have functional autonomy, zero interference of political executives improve efficiency
  • The reputation of these Institutes increases the career opportunities of their students and gets them relatively better salary packages. In fact, the top 10 Universities in India are mostly INIs.

How many types of Universities are there?

There are 4 types of universities in India:

Central Universities: A central university is one which has been established by an Act of Parliament. There are 54 central universities in India. The President of India acts as a ‘Visitor’ for all the Central Universities. Some of the top Central Universities in India are Jawaharlal Nehru University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Banaras Hindu University, and the like. These also happen to be some of the top universities in India.

State Universities: State Universities are public universities that are established through an act of the legislative assembly of the state. They are managed by the State Government and fall under the scope of University Grants Commission (UGC). It is the responsibility of the State to arrange and distribute funds to these universities. The Universities of Madras, Mumbai and Calcutta are the oldest State Universities of India. They are also counted amongst the top universities in India.

Private Universities: Private Universities are those which are recognised by the University Grants Commission and are funded by private bodies. In simple words, these universities are financed by corporate entities framed by educationists and/or private individuals who feel strongly about education. Universities like BITS Pilani and Vellore Institute of Technology are some of the top 10 private universities in India.

Deemed-to-be Universities: There are some Institutes of Higher Education that are not Universities. However, owing to the high caliber of learning experience that they offer, they are declared as Institutions ‘Deemed-to-be-Universities’. This is done by the Central Government, on the advice of the UGC, because these Institutes work at a very high standard in their respective areas of education. Naturally, some of the best universities in India fall under this category like IITs, IIMs, etc.

What is the difference between a University and Deemed University?

There’s not much difference between a university and a deemed university. A normal university (state/central/private) will have to adhere to the guidelines and rules framed by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Whereas, a deemed university is granted autonomy under the Ministry of Human Resource Development. Thus, they are free to make decisions regarding courses, examinations, admission, fee and degree.
