Anatomy Types  Meaning
Gross Anatomy  They are gross in size and can be visible through naked eyes.

Moreover, they are macroscopic organs or parts

However, to study this area you have to learn dissections and surgical methods.

Lungs, Liver, Kidney, and Heart are examples of Gross Anatomy.

Also, it is subdivided into different parts.

  • Surface Anatomy-  Study of External Body
  • Regional Anatomy- Study of Internal and External Regions
  • System Anatomy- Study of Organ System
Microscopic Anatomy  They are small in size and cannot be visible through naked eyes.

Moreover, they have microscopic properties.

Also, it is the study of the small structure organs in the body

Cells, Tissues are the example of Microscopic Anatomy

It is also divided into two parts.

What is Human Anatomy?

In Greek words, ‘ana’ means up and ‘tome’ means to cut. So if you combine these to words it is “to cut up”. Human Anatomy is the study of different parts and different structures of the body. In human anatomy, you can learn about the different parts of organs and tissue. You will learn about every part of theirs. Also with the parts, you will learn about their functions and working. This is very important in the field of medical studies.

Human Anatomy is without physiology is senseless. So along with anatomy, you have to learn about physiology. Where physiology is the study of the function of various parts of the body. Moreover, it is the understanding of how the body functions and manages the works. Also, it mainly focuses on the various organs, tissues, and cells of the body. In this part, of course, you will learn all the levels of the organs.

The concept of anatomy and physiology follows parallelism. They both are interrelated with each other. If you want to study this subject, you have to study these two concepts parallelly. In this course, you will have all the knowledge of the human body. So if you study this you can get the importance of human anatomy and physiology in the field of medicine. History of Human Anatomy In India

Introduction

In today’s generation, we are learning about the new technologies which have made human anatomy very easy. There are technologies like ultrasonic, x-ray, body scanning, and more that have a life very easy. But these technologies are mostly inspired through the old history of India in anatomy science. Anatomy was a major subject in ancient India from the 16th century.  The concept of anatomy was derived from the dissection of birds and animals. Moreover, scholars use to sacrifice birds and animals to know about the various organs and tissues of the body and conduct research on it.

The archeological survey of India conducted in the Indus valley civilization has proved that anatomy was taught to students at that time. There were enough pieces of evidence and craving on the walls of the dissection of the birds and animals. Moreover, scholars also research dead human bodies to know more about them. You can also see various details about the organs and tissues in Vedas. Most of the scholars were inspired by Vedas to conduct their research. Some of the inspirations of Vedas are given below.

  • ‘Lotus with nine gates’, is a reference to the heart. Here ‘lotus’ is heart whereas ‘nine gates’ means 9 openings in the heart.
  • There is the concept of embryology, in Vedas too. You can see the image embryo carved on the pillars of the Indus Valley civilization.
  • Also, the mentions of the skeleton are found in Veda. It has also the reference of 206 bones.

More About It

During the golden age of medicine in India which is Ayurveda. Many types of research were conducted by scholars in Ayurveda. Also one of the greatest scholars of Ayurveda ‘Saria Sthaka’ has done great research in the field of medicine. Moreover, he has given many concepts of anatomy, dissection, and embryology. He also studies bone and muscles and various organs of the body. Most of his studies were inspired by Veda and his research. So he is also known as ‘the Father of Surgery’ in India.

So after the golden age, here come the colonial period, where most of the research was already gone. But most of the studies were still there. Many ayurvedic institutions were also established in Calcutta, Madras, and Bombay. These all institutions revived the studies of medicine which was very famous in the golden era. Now we can still see their work and their hard work.

Types of Human Anatomy

Human Anatomy is a vast concept. It is the study of every structure and dissection of every organ and part of the body. Moreover, it is divided into two sections. They are as follows.

Gross Anatomy

The parts and the organs that are visible through naked eyes are Gross Anatomy. It is also known as Macroscopic Anatomy. Under gross anatomy, we can learn about the dissection of the organs. Also, the surgeries are done through tropical methods. Hearts, Lungs, Kidney etch are examples of Gross Anatomy. It is again subdivided into 3 types which are as follows.

Types  Meaning
Surface Anatomy
  • It is also known as superficial anatomy
  • It focuses on the surface area of the body, where dissection is not possible.
  • Skin, Bones, etc are examples of surface anatomy
Regional Anatomy
  • It is the study of internal and external regions of the body.
  • Here the study of dissections is not necessary.
  • Abdomen, Neck, Chest, etc are examples of regional anatomy
System Anatomy
  • It is also known as organs anatomy
  • Also, it focuses on the various systems of the body.
  • It is the study of the structure of organs and their dissections.
  • Nervous System, Respiratory system is examples of System Anatomy

Microscopic Anatomy

The cells and tissues are not visible through naked eyes. So under microscopic anatomy, it studies the structure and function of various cells and tissues of the body. This helps to understand the working and to perform various medicinal actives to it. Some of the examples are RBC, WBC, RNA, DNA, and more. The study of these microscopic anatomy helps to make medicines and vaccines. Since medicines do not directly enter the organ, they need these cells and tissues. So it has made the medical field more advance. However, these microscopic anatomy is again subdivided into 2 types which are as follows.

Types  Meaning
Cytology
  • It is the study of the structure of cells
  • It is a microscopic anatomy
  • Mainly focus on the composition and position of the cells in the body
  • RBC, WBC, Platelets are examples of the cytology
Histology
  • It is the study of the structure of tissues
  • It is a microscopic anatomy
  • Mainly focus on the composition and position of the tissues in the body
  • Muscles Tissue, Nervous Tissue are examples of the histology
