Science and Technology have played a significant part in India’s growth and development. During the period of British rule in India Engg. developed as a stream of education due to the need for developing roads, buildings and bridges. Therefore growth of education in Engg. was undertaken for enhancing the skills of artisans as well as craftsmen.

Also, need was felt for improving the apparatus and instruments used in the military operations by the army and the navy.

Consequently, in the year of 1847 the first Engg. college in the country named Thomas College of Civil Engg. was instituted in Rourkee. Moreover, the institute which is now known as the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Rourkee (in Uttarakhand) was developed for training students in Civil Engg..

What is Engineering?

Masters in Technology is the postgraduate degree awarded to the engineering students upon completion of a two year course. Moreover, it is availed by the B. Tech i.e., Bachelor of Technology and B.E. i.e., Bachelor of Engineering degree holders. Furthermore, this engineering program offers in-depth knowledge and understanding of the various disciplines of engineering. Besides, there are 2600 institutions in the country including Indian Institute of Technology IIT [Bombay, Madras, Delhi] and National Institute of Technology NIT [Trichy] offering this program. However, the candidates in order to enter this program must have completed their graduation in engineering. In addition, those interested can pursue doctoral programs after completing their M. Tech degree.

PhD:

The Doctorate Degree in engineering is awarded upon completion of three to five years of research. Moreover, it is granted to the post-graduates undergoing intense research and study in engineering disciplines. Eligibility for Engineering

There is a minimum eligibility criteria set out for the aspirants of each engineering degree. Also, there is a minimum standard to be met by the candidate in order to be able to sit for the entrance examination and get selected for the engineering degree programs. Moreover, the criteria varies at each level, from the minimum marks to be obtained in Class 12th Board Examination to the core subjects to be studied. B. Tech. In order to pursue the Bachelor of Technology degree program in India the candidate must have passed the Class 12th examination in Science Stream. However, the students belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe have a 5% relaxation in the stipulated minimum qualifying percentage.
M. Tech. The students intending to pursue postgraduate degree in engineering must have obtained a graduation degree in B.E. /B. Tech. Also, the Bachelor of Technology and Bachelor of Engineering degrees must be obtained from a recognized university in the respective specializations. Moreover the candidate must have passed the graduation degree in engineering with 50- 60% marks.
Ph.D. The candidates looking for PhD in engineering must have obtained a postgraduate degree of M.E. or M. Tech. Additionally the Masters in Technology or the Masters in Engineering must be obtained from a recognized university. Besides, candidates who have qualified the UGC NET, JRF, GATE and such other exams are eligible for applying to the doctorate degree programs.
Diploma The candidates intending to undertake Diploma in engineering must have passed the Class 10th Board Examination from any recognized Board. Also, the candidates who have qualified the Class 12th Board Examination in Mathematics and Science subjects are eligible to apply for the program. The candidate must have obtained 50% marks in Class 12th and 50% marks in Class 10th examinations.

Entrance Exams for Engineering

Being one of the most desired degree programs in the country Engineering Entrance Examinations are attended by lakhs of students every year. Therefore, the entrance examination for the engineering programs are conducted at state and national levels along with examinations conducted at institutional levels. Also, the most popular entrance examination is JEE mains which is also one of the toughest and most competitive exams conducted in the country. Besides, the examination is attended by around ten lakh students each year. In addition, this examination along with the JEE advanced examination is evaluated for allowing admissions to some of the most prestigious institutions in the country. Moreover, there are examinations like KIITEE and SRMJEE along with BITSAT which are conducted for offering admissions in the engineering courses. Furthermore there are around fifty entrance examinations conducted throughout the country for engineering aspirants.

JEE Mains [Joint Entrance Examination]

The JEE Mains examination is conducted by the National Testing Agency [NTA] which is an independent organization under the Society Registration Act. Additionally the Act of 1860 established the Agency under the Human Resource Development Ministry. Also, the Education Ministry made the NTA responsible for conducting the examination throughout the country from the year 2019. Furthermore the Joint Entrance Examination Mains papers consists of two papers. Moreover, the first paper is for allowing admissions to undergraduate engineering programs like B.E. and B. Tech.  In addition, these exams are for admissions in Indian Institute of Technology IIT, National Institute of Technology NIT as well as Center Funded Technical Institution CFTI. Besides these are also for admissions to institutions and universities funded by the State Governments and as an eligibility exam to write JEE advanced.

However the JEE Mains examination is conducted in the month of February and March as well as April and May. Average Fee Structure of Engineering

The engineering colleges in India providing engineering degrees in multiple disciplines charge varying fees for the courses offered. Also, the top institutions in the country charge around Rs. 2,50,000 as an average fee per year for their engineering programs.
