The Birla Institute of Technology was founded by eminent philanthropist and industrialist, Late Shri BM Birla. At first, it was started with the department of Mechanical Engineering. Later on, different departments were introduced gradually. BIT, Mesra is the first technical institution particularly, to establish a Department of Space Engineering and Rocketry. Apart from that, it also offers PG programs in association with the Indian Space Research Organization. Moreover, in 1972, the University received autonomous status.
