How does an institute become a ‘Deemed-to-be-University’?

Through the Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 the status of deemed university awarded in accordance.

An institution should fulfill the following criteria in order to  be eligible to declared as ‘Deemed University’:

  1. Has received the top grade from NAAC and/or NBA for the past two cycles and continues to receive the highest grade in the third cycle (five year cycle). Similarly, in the case of the NBA, this accreditation should apply to all of the league’s approved courses. Alternatively, the deemed universities must have the highest NAAC/NBA category at the time of application and in the previous NAAC/NBA cycle, as well as ranked in the top 20 in any specific category or in the top 100 overall in the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings at the time of application and in the previous two years. However, in the case of the NBA, this accreditation apply to all of the approved courses.
  2.  Has shown university qualities through a variety of curriculum, and then contributions to teaching, and credible research output.
  3.  Has at least five postgraduate departments with research programmes that have been in existence for at least three years.
  4.  Must involved in research, and then publications, and academic works, with PhD and post-doctoral research programmes. Most importantly, Faculty in the humanities, social sciences, and languages must have at least 10 publications per year, and faculty in the sciences, medicine, and engineering must have at least 15 publications per year in UGC-listed refereed journals with an impact factor.

  1. Must have a suitable number of full-time, and then fully qualified faculty for teaching and research in accordance with UGC/concerned Statutory Council(s) guidelines.
