Points to Remember About Cut-Off Marks

The following points will help to clarify how the UPSC Cut Off is determined:

  • Only General Studies I is to determine the UPSC prelims cut-off marks. The General Studies II or CSAT paper is purely qualifying in nature and does not count for merit ranking. To qualify for the mains, candidates must score at least 33 percent on the GS II paper.
  • The UPSC cut-off marks are the scores of the last candidate who was chosen depending on the number of vacancies available in a given category. Only after the release of the final result of the Civil Services Exam does the UPSC share the cut-off marks for both Prelims and Mains.

The UPSC has clarified a few points about applicant selection based on cut-off scores:

  • If two candidates receive equal aggregate marks in the Civil Services Examination, the Commission breaks the tie by awarding a higher rank to the applicant who receives higher marks in both obligatory papers and the IAS Interview.
  • If two applicants score the same in all of their obligatory papers and UPSC personality tests, the older candidate will be given a higher rank.
  • If two candidates score the same in both obligatory papers and the UPSC CSE Interview and are the same age, the applicant who scored higher in solely compulsory papers will be given a higher rank.
