India can be called the home of engineers. Every year, almost 6000 fresh engineering students graduate to build their lives. While all of these belong to different engineering fields, we will focus on electronics and electrical engineering.

What is electronics and electrical engineering?  

Since electronics and electrical engineering is very vast and heavy for any novice student, universities and colleges run them through an introductory course during the first year of a student’s education. This course, which introduces the fundamental concepts of electrical application and electricity, is students’ basic electrical engineering course. It is also a great refresher for students who had studied these concepts in their school days.  

But once college ends, what next? 

If you are one of the fresh electrical engineering graduates, unsure of the path forward, I have compiled a list of options, weighing the pros and cons in each, to help you make an informed decision as to what to do after basic electrical engineering.  

Possible options for electronics and electrical engineering graduates 

It is rightly said that the sky’s the limit for an engineer. This trickles down to the limitless opportunities that appear before electrical engineering graduates after their studies. Three of the most sought after options after engineering in India are: 

  1. Get a job:  

Many electrical engineering graduates want to try their hand in their work-life right after college. They do this better to understand the career opportunities after basic electrical engineering and try those to make an informed decision on their choice. Working in an MNC, or even a small start-up, makes one aware of the required skills to excel in the workforce.  

  1. Pursue higher studies in management:  

This option is seeing a rising trend in recent years. Many electrical engineering graduates try to understand the business world to find a career after basic electrical engineering in that field. They venture out to pursue a Masters degree in Management (MiM) or a Masters in Business Administration (MBA). Both of these options will be discussed in detail further.  

  1. Pursue higher studies in electrical engineering:  

Students’ third most sought after option after basic electrical engineering degrees is studying in-depth in their field. By pursuing degrees in M.Tech, Masters in Science (MS) or a Masters in Information System (MIS), these graduates embark on career opportunities after electrical engineering in the fields of research or get placed in technological institutions.  

Though getting a job soon after a basic electrical engineering degree may open up your mind and help you choose which profession you would like to see a future in, the truth is, many of the young graduates that look at jobs as options after basic electrical engineering, they lack specific skills that can boost their job performance. These skills can be gained through higher studies. And one doesn’t need to look further than our home country since there are a lot of great post-graduation courses in India after electrical engineering.  

What after basic electrical engineering?  

While it is important for students to seek job offers from large companies, they often misplace the importance of completing their education in this hurry.  

With so many engineers graduating every year, a simple B.Tech degree is not sufficient to navigate this competitive world. Thus, in this list, I have focused on the options for higher education after basic electrical engineering, highlighting the career paths that can be formed from them.  

1. Masters of Business Administration (MBA) 

MBA is a masters degree in Business Administration. It is a specialization course that trains a student in the art of business organization and management. During the hiring process, employers of big firms prefer to look at candidates that have an MBA degree as potential hires. An MBA degree is beneficial for a graduate as it helps them escalate their career and reach higher posts in the company.  

Courses under MBA  

MBA is the umbrella under which there are different specialization courses:  

  1. MBA in Marketing    

This course teaches students the skills of understanding consumer behaviour, market research, marketing tools and techniques, digital and native advertising, and tips on boosting sales by understanding the market competition.  

  1. MBA in Banking and Finance 

This course enables students to oversee the organization’s financial management- from planning and implementing to regulating the inflow and outflow of assets. Students who possess an innate understanding of math can choose this course as it provides one of the highest paying career opportunities after basic electrical engineering.  

  1. MBA in Data Analytics 

This course teaches students how to use data analytics tools to mine through countless data points, break them up, and sort them into meaningful areas for the company to take action. ‘Data Scientists’, as they are called, is one of the great career options after engineering.  

  1. MBA in Operation Management 

The Operation Manager’s role in an organization includes managing product quality and customer relations and keeping track of the inventory and supply management. Along with this, the key role of an operations manager is boosting productivity. If you pursue an MBA in operation management as higher studies after electrical engineering, these skills can be taught to you.  

Career options after electronics and electrical engineering with MBA 

Having an MBA degree adds an important point of differentiation to your resume. So when you go to a company for an interview, an MBA degree shines. After completion, you can look for a job in the following career options after electronics and electrical engineering:

  1. Client-Relationship Management

2. Masters in Management (MiM) 

Masters in management is a degree that is often compared to an MBA. At a fundamental level, they are the same – both are specialization courses that offer skills for the workforce. On all other fronts, they are different from each other: 

  1. Work Experience- MBA is a course that expects students to have had certain work experience before joining the course. MiM has no such requirement and encourages students to join straight after graduation.  

  1. Course structure– Many say that MBA is like an umbrella that tries to cover a whole lot of ground in its studies, whereas MiM has a more specific structure to its course. While this does not mean that one is better than the other, both can be looked at as pros and cons for different individuals.  

  1. Placement Options– While MBA is looked upon primarily by 25-28 year old adults who aim to improve their skills in their respective professions. Fresh graduates seek a MiM degree to build a solid foundation in their choice of field. Though, increasingly many fresh graduates are also looking increasingly to get an MBA degree after a few years on the job to boost their careers.

  1. Masters in Accounting 

Masters in Accounting is a practical and skill-oriented program. Focussing on subjects pertaining to account management enables students to develop analytical and technical skills that help them in their professional development. If one is looking for accounting as one of the career options after basic electrical engineering, then a masters in accounting will help them create a foundation of the required skills.  

  1. MiM in Financial Economics  

A masters degree in financial economics is for those electrical engineering graduates that want to enter the world of business finance. It readies you with academic knowledge and know-how to make you a competent financial analyst in the finance industry. A booming sector, financial economics is rising to be chosen by many fresh graduates to focus on their higher studies after electrical engineering.  

3. MiM in Strategy Management

Businesses are increasingly looking for people who can look at the big picture and develop a way forward for the company. A masters in strategic management provides you with skills to do just that. MiM in strategy management enables students to formulate strategies after looking at rising market trends and consumer insights and implementing them in different areas of impact.   

Career options after electrical engineering with MiM  

MiM becomes a perfect stepping stone for students who want to enter the business world but wonder what to do after basic electrical engineering. As mentioned above, fresh graduates can look at a degree in MiM as higher studies after BTech. It opens them to the following career options after basic electrical engineering:

  1. Advertising Manager 

  1. Development Manager 

  1.  General Operations 

  1.  Human Resources Manager 

  1.  Public Relations Manager

You may wonder that these are not higher jobs on the corporate ladder. This can be interpreted as a con of a degree in MSc. However, it shouldn’t be. A MiM degree is readily available to students who have just graduated from electrical engineering and offers them a quick way up the ladder once they enter a company. 

3. Masters in Engineering Management (MEM)  

A Masters in Engineering Management is designed to link three different aspects together under one course- technology, basic electrical engineering and management. It is popularly called the engineer’s MBA as it develops similar skills.  

A MEM degree is perfect for those graduates who want to stay close to their engineering field yet hone the skills of the management world. The curriculum enables the students to develop the skills of managing the basic electrical engineering process and devise ways of making it more effective. The idea is to blend basic electrical engineering and management skills to construct a highly efficient plan and enable high productivity from the employees.  

MEM is a degree generally sought after for fresh graduates who want to enter the business world but not in the traditional management roles. Though they want to rise higher on the company’s hierarchy, they want to do it through their particular field of interest.  

Career options after electrical engineering with MEM  

Once the MEM degree is completed, one is not restricted to just sticking in the basic electrical engineering side. As mentioned above, MEM is the engineers MBA and is a reputed degree that opens up many career options after basic electrical engineering:  

  1. Client-Services Analyst 

  1. Application Engineer 

  1. Automation Engineer 

  1. Business Analyst 

  1. Business Strategist 

  1. Clinical Specialist 

  1. Associate Marketing Manager 

4. Masters in Technology (M.Tech) 

The safest bet for an electrical engineering student is to continue their original path. Similar to your electrical engineering degree, M.Tech provides further and more in-depth knowledge on your chosen branch of basic electrical engineering and acts more like an extension of your undergraduate studies. However, in an M.Tech course, you are more involved with applying the knowledge gained during the electrical engineering years.  

Benefits of an M.Tech degree in India  

In the above segment, I feel I’ve given a very one-sided approach to the benefits a basic electrical engineering student might get by pursuing a business degree in their higher studies after electrical engineering. Thus, to balance out the arguments, I have complied why M.Tech is still one of the most important degrees in a country like India:  

  1. India is still developing. And this developing country needs educated minds that can see them through the various development and improvement projects and thus take the country forward. 

  1. Pursuing an M.Tech soon after electrical engineering enables the student to do more in-depth research on their particular discipline and get more control over it 

  1. Pursuing M.Tech, similar to an MBA, opens you up to an industrial network, which further helps in job hunting.  

  1. Even with an M.Tech degree, one can climb up the corporate ladder to settle in managerial roles.  

Career options after electrical engineering with M.Tech  

Having an M.Tech degree is still a matter of honour. It is a prestigious degree that opens up many career options after a basic electrical engineering degree:  

  1. Consulting companies  

  1. Core Engineering Companies like L&T 

  1. Research and Development Centers like BARC and ISRO
