The world operates based on the laws of nature. To understand this, we have tried to use countless theories and equations that have helped us make sense of the world and our universe. Today, we will give you an insight into one such science- inorganic chemistry.

But before that, let us briefly understand the domain of scientific studies.  

Humans and Science  

The dictionary defines science as “the intellectual study of the physical and natural world system through experiments and observations”. While this does a very good job of explaining the meaning of science, it dives deep into technical terms. In simple words, science is the study of the world and everything in and outside it. This is a comprehensive definition. However, science is a very broad study too.

Different Types of Science  

Humans, to make sense of the natural world, have categorised the workings of the natural world under three main branches of science;  

1. Physics  

Physics is often referred to as the mother of all sciences. This is because the branch of physics deals with understanding how matter is formed and its properties. Some of the most famous scientists, like Albert Einstein, Stephan Hawking, were all professors of Physics.  

Physics studies the world from a macroscopic universe encompassing microscopic interactions of atoms-perspective. This has helped humanity understand the four basic laws of the universe, namely the strong and weak nuclear force, gravitation and electromagnetic force.  

The key task of physics is to find the common link between all these four fundamental forces of nature, something that countless physicists have constantly been working towards.  

2. Biology  

Biology is defined as the study of life. This field of study gives humans an understanding of the anatomy of humans and all life on our planet.  

In recent times, the inter-disciplinary form of science has often intertwined the study of biology with other branches of science, namely physics and chemistry. This is because many biological functions have a strong correlation to other scientific phenomena observed around the universe.  

One of the most important questions that biologists are yet to answer is how did life originate on Earth?  

3. Chemistry  

Chemistry is one of the main branches of science since chemistry deals with how the elements of the world are structured and created.  

While there is a lot of interdisciplinary research in all the different sciences, chemistry is used in all types of research. This is because chemical compounds are the building blocks of life. Even with non-living things, all objects are formed and operate with the laws of chemical composition. Thus, making chemistry one of the most vital studies of science.  

Why study inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry?  

Everyone conjures up pictures of lab coats, test tubes, and crazy experiments when one talks about chemistry. But, this is not the case. As I mentioned above, all objects, be they living or non-living, form and operate with chemical activities.  

The American Chemical Society had once said, “All of our senses, sight, sound, smell, taste, hearing, are all conducted through chemical properties”. Thus, even if you are not a chemist, your body automatically does chemistry without you even realising it. Thus, making you all chemists.  

But, of course, that is not the case. Like all other fields of study, chemistry requires years of practice and experiments to produce credible research. The broader field of chemistry is thus, broken into five different types:  

1. Analytical Chemistry:  

As the name suggests, analytical chemistry is the study of chemical components and their properties. Analytical chemists research by exposing matter to other chemical compounds and analysing the results. Analytical chemists are responsible for studies making our food last longer while maintaining freshness and taste.  

2. Biochemistry:  

I had mentioned above that biology delves into all other branches of science. In chemistry, it comes in the form of biochemistry. Here, biochemists try to understand the chemical workings of the biological organs and components. Biochemists have been instrumental in helping us discover the human genome.  

3. Physical Chemistry: 

Here we see the mixing of physical and chemical studies. This interdisciplinary field of study deals with understanding the chemical reasoning behind physics operations. Most notably, physical chemistry has helped us decide how water turns into vapour if put under fire or at high temperatures.  

4. Organic Chemistry:  

In chemistry, living things are referred to as organic. Living things or organic objects are classified as matter that contains carbon bonds. Thus, humans and all life as we know it is called carbon-based life. These organic chemists try to understand the workings of living things, especially how carbon plays a vital role in creating life.  

5. Inorganic Chemistry:  

Like all living things are organic, all non-living objects are referred to as inorganic. Among the many sciences that humans have been able to study, one of the most fascinating is inorganic chemistry. A result of the larger branch of chemistry, inorganic chemistry, in its way, is unique and exciting. It helps humans study other elements found on Earth, like metals and minerals.

Inorganic Chemistry and its properties  

If you attended your science classes, you would remember the teacher making elaborate diagrams with carbon molecules. This is because carbon is a compound that can interact very well with other molecules and make everlasting bonds. All organic chemistry is based on the bonds formed by carbon. Then with inorganic chemistry, you would beg the question, how do non-carbon molecules form bonds?  

In the world of chemistry, there are many different ways molecules interact with each other. In the case of inorganic objects, most contain anions and cations joined using ionic bonds. This is a process that is also called electrovalent bonding. In such cases, inorganic matter combines and links by attracting the oppositely charged ion. Thus cations and anions present in these matter help form bonds using electrovalency. Here, the outermost shell, or valence, is permanently transferred to the other molecule. Thus, binding them permanently in an electrovalent bond. Another important property of inorganic chemistry is that inorganic matter is a very poor conductor of electricity.  

Studying Inorganic Chemistry 

Students who wish to study inorganic chemistry can do so in their postgraduate diploma programmes. Many colleges across India offer students the opportunity to pursue a Masters of Science (MSc) in Inorganic Chemistry. The course is two years and helps students understand the properties and applications of inorganic chemistry.  

Eligibility Criteria for MSc Inorganic Chemistry  

To successfully be placed in an MSc for Inorganic Chemistry course, a student must  

  • Have 55% aggregate marks in Grade 12, preferably with subjects including physics and chemistry 
  • Have graduated with a BSc in Chemistry or equivalent degree from a recognised university 

  • Have at least scored 60% aggregate marks in their bachelor’s degree

  • Introduction to Inorganic chemistry  
  • Introduction to Organic Chemistry  

  • Thermodynamics  
  • Chemical Kinetics  
  • Quantum Chemistry

  • Novel regents for inorganic chemistry  

  • Structure and bonding of elements  

Note: This is just an overview of the general syllabus taught to MSc Inorganic Chemistry students. Your college university may choose to add or delete courses according to their curriculum.
