Mathematics

When we say mathematics, we basically mean the study of numbers, different shapes, processes of counting, etc. Our daily life is almost impossible without basic maths. For example, if we have to go somewhere, we use maths to analyze how much time it will take us to reach there, or how far that place is. It is just the units that differ. For instance, we use kilometers for distance, hours for time, and so on. Therefore, it is quite evident that daily life is impossible without mathematics.

Studying mathematics as a subject is quite fun. It is all about getting your concepts right. There is a misconception that Mathematics is a tough subject. But in reality, it is one of the easiest subjects out there. It is due to the fact that if you can grasp the concepts once, you do not have to stop at all. You can be a pro in doing any kind of maths problems including various Advanced Maths problems too.

In this article on mathematics, we will talk about different aspects of this beautiful subject. We will discuss how to effectively study mathematics, its career prospects, different fields of mathematics and its applications, etc.  If you fear mathematics, this article is just for you. At the end of the article, you will definitely know the proper way to approach the subject to study effectively. We will also give you the names of some amazing books on mathematics. If you read those books, maths will never be a tough subject for you. In this article, you will come to know how to make a great career by studying mathematics. You will also come to know about some premier institutes of India to study mathematics and shine as a mathematician in your career.

Mathematics as a subject:

Mathematics is a very interesting subject. The application of this subject in our daily life is huge. You do anything or go to buy anything, maths is present there. So, you can never ignore this subject. You can build an excellent career if you study this subject in college. We apply trigonometry, probability, statistics, etc in daily life and in businesses. There are various branches of Mathematics. Some of them are Arithmetic, Algebra,  Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, Statistics, etc. Let us discuss some of them.

Arithmetic:

This is the basic branch of mathematics. It basically deals with various numbers and their applications in different ways. For instance, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division form their foundation. As we know, we cannot move forward in mathematics with the application of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. So, they are used to solve basic as well as advanced maths question and complex equations. Arithmetic is the most widely used branch of mathematics in our daily lives as it is used in simple calculations.

Algebra:

It is highly broad. Algebra is used to solve generic equations. Have you seen those equations where we use x,y,z, etc variables? We solve them using algebra.

Geometry:

Have you ever wondered about the various shapes and sizes of different objects? Then geometry is the branch of maths you should explore as soon as possible. Geometry deals with the shape, sizes, and volumes of different figures. It is a practical branch that mainly focuses on studying shapes, polygons, and geometric objects in both 2 and 3 dimensions.

Trigonometry:

This branch of mathematics mainly focuses on studying the sides and angles of different triangles in order to measure distance and length. It is the study of the correlation between the sides and angles of triangles. Trigonometry is all about various triangles and their different properties!

Probability and Statistics:

Probability and statistics use different mathematical concepts to predict various events that may happen in the future. For example, if we toss a coin, we can predict whether it will be head or tail using the concept of probability. It organizes, analyzes, and interprets a broad collection of various data. The scope of this branch of mathematics involves studying the principles governing various random events and numerical data.

In addition to this, there are various branches of advanced maths. They are matrix algebra, game theory, set theory, complex numbers, operation research, cartesian geometry, etc.

How to study Mathematics:

There are many people who think that mathematics is a tough subject. But in reality, it is a very easy subject if you understand it properly. People fail to grasp the initial concepts and call the subject hard. Whereas there are many students who call it an easy subject. The question is what makes a subject easy or tough? It is the understanding of the basic concepts that makes a subject easy or hard. For instance, if you understand something, it becomes easy for you. But if you do not understand the same thing, you call it hard. This thing is applicable to every subject, not only maths. In this section, we will talk about how to study this subject effectively. Let us have a look at the following points which illustrate how to study mathematics properly:

Clear your basics:

You cannot jump into advanced maths if your basics are not clear. While it is also true that you are not always going to get easy problems in maths. Anyone can solve an easy problem. But that’s not effective learning. You must learn A, B, C, and all the 26 alphabets of English to write an English word. Similarly, you must learn A, B, C of mathematics too. People often do this mistake. They do not read the theory properly and go to solve the numerical at the end of the chapter. How would you know how to solve the problems of algebra if you do not know the mathematical formulas?

So, it is very important to clear our basic understanding. For example, let us talk about trigonometry now. Suppose, you have a chapter on trigonometry and there are a hundred numerical to do at the end of the chapter. If you just read the theory superficially and try to solve those problems given at the end, it is evident that you will not be able to solve most of them. The reason is simple. You do not have a basic understanding of how the theory works, isn’t it? So, before you jump into solving those problems, make sure you have thoroughly gone through the theory.

Make sure that you know each and every detail of the basic theory associated with every chapter. Have a clear understanding of everything that you read. So, it will be a cakewalk to solve those numerical if you know the theory well. Mathematics will not be a hard subject after that. People who call even the basic maths hard have very little understanding of the basic concepts. Do not be one of them.

Practice as much as you can:

There is no shortcut if you want to succeed. You will have to work hard. The same theory is applied here too. To be able to understand mathematics properly, you must practice as much as you can. Without practice, you will forget things. Once you have learned any theory or mathematical formulas, practice problems associated with it. The more you will practice, your concept will keep getting clearer. You can’t just learn the chapters of maths, you will have to understand the concepts and keep practicing. Then only you will be perfect in mathematics. So, practice right from day 1 and practice as much as you can.

Always start by solving easy examples:

Often people have a habit of starting maths problems with hard examples. See, you can’t drive a car directly in the fifth gear, you have to start from the basic that is the first gear. Similarly, start solving easy examples given in the book. They are fairly easy to understand. As you move forward, increase the level of difficulty. Following this, you will not feel much hard. Solve examples in your textbooks. See if your steps are correct or not. If they are correct, then there is nothing to worry about. If they are not correct, find out where you went wrong. You can have a lot of progress that way. Once you master the simpler problems, move to the complex ones. That is how you are supposed to study Mathematics.

Clear all your doubts:

It is necessary to clear each and every doubt. Do not leave it at all. Ask a teacher, or a friend – doesn’t matter. You can also refer to youtube videos. There are so many youtube videos available nowadays that will teach you many things. If you keep your doubts to yourself, you will never be able to master the subject of Mathematics. So, clear all your doubts before it is too late.

Some of the best books to study mathematics and clear your basic concepts are listed below:

Career prospect in Mathematics:

With a degree in mathematics, you can do a lot of things. For example, you can enter various fields as maths professionals are desired by everyone. You can enter the field of engineering, for instance. It is not always engineering degree holders who dominate the field of engineering. Maths graduates are always in demand in some highly specialized roles. Mathematics graduates are said to be better at solving many real-world, physical problems. They can also be found working in structural, mechanical, chemical, aeronautical, and many other domains of engineering.

Similarly, you can go for higher research after a degree and post-graduation in mathematics. After that, you can be a mathematician and work on various research and development projects. You can also choose to teach in universities and colleges. If you are good at your subject, universities may offer you a job to teach the students. In India, if you study statistics, you can also appear in the Indian Statistical Service exam conducted by the prestigious Union Public Service Commission. In addition to this, you can go and work in the banking sector. Banks are always in need of professionals who are good at math.
