What is the Eligibility criteria for the UPSC Engineering Services exam?

What is the IES exam? – The UPSC engineering services.

Indian Engineering Services Examination is also known as UPSC Engineering Services

Examination(ESE) is conducted once a year to select Class – 1 designated engineers for several government departments.

 

The major departments for UPSC Engineering services which they are recruited for are:

  • Indian Railway
  • Power
  • Telecommunication
  • Central water engineering
  • Defense service of engineers

What are the  UPSC Engineering Service Examination’s(ESE) eligibility criteria?

  1. Age

Age

The UPSC engineering services age limit criteria are as follows:

  • For a general category candidate, the age limit is from 21years to 30 years. A candidate should not enter the age of 30 on 1st January of that year.

Eg. a candidate who wants to sit for the exam in 2020 must be born after 2nd January 1990 and before 2nd January 1999.

  • If a candidate belongs to scheduled caste or scheduled tribe then a relaxation of 5 years is given, i.e the upper age limit is 35 for the UPSC engineering services exam..
  • A 3-year relaxation is given to the candidates belonging to Other backward classes(OBC).
  • A maximum of five-years of relaxation is given to those candidates, who had been domiciled in Jammu & Kashmir in the period from 1 January 1980 to 31 January 1989.
  • Three years of relaxation in upper age limit of the UPSC engineering services exam are also given to those candidates who were working for defense services of India and were disabled in operations:
    • With any foreign country, or
    • In a disturbed area
  • Maximum five-year relaxation for ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs who have rendered at least five years Military Service as on 1st January 2020 and have been released
    • on completion of assignment (including those whose assignment is due to be completed within one year from 1st January 2020) otherwise than by way of dismissal or discharge on account of misconduct or inefficiency, or
    • on account of physical disability attributable to Military Service or
    • on invalided
  • Ten years of maximum relaxation is given to those candidates who are physically disabled like blind, deaf-mute and Orthopaedically handicapped.

Education Qualification

Engineering Services Examination’s education eligibilities are as follows, candidates to qualify the UPSC engineering services exams eligibility criteria must have at least one of these for UPSC engineering services.

  • Candidates having a degree in engineering from a University recognized by one of these, Central or State Legislature or other Educational Institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as Universities under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 in India.
  • Candidates having cleared the section A and section B of Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers India.
  • Candidates having an Engineering degree or diploma from a foreign College or University or Institution which is recognised by the Indian government.
  • Passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India);
  • Passed Associate Membership Examination Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India;
  • Candidates who have cleared the graduate membership examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London held after November of 1959 are also eligible.
  • Passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London held after November 1959.

Note: For the ones who are in Indian Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engineering Posts), they either need any of the above qualifications or the following qualification will also work for them:

M.Sc. degree or it’s equivalent with Electronics, Wireless Communication, Radio Engineering or Radio Physics as a special subject.

 Candidates appearing in their Engineering degree or equivalent exam are also eligible to compete, however, such candidates who qualify the written exam will be required to submit the proof of passing the engineering examination.

A candidate who is otherwise qualified but who has taken a degree from a foreign University which is not recognised by Government may also apply to the Commission and may be admitted to the examination at the discretion of the Commission.

Nationality

Candidates from any of the following nationalities are eligible for the Indian Engineering

Services Examination and can apply for the same:

  • A citizen of India,
  • A citizen of Nepal.
  • A citizen of Bhutan,
  • A refugee migrated before 1-January-1962 from Tibetan to settle permanently in India,
  • A person of Indian origin who migrated from Burma, Pakistan, Sri Lanka or East African countries of Uganda, Kenya, the United Republic of Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Ethiopia and Zaire or from Vietnam to settle permanently in India.

Note: All the citizens other than citizens of India are required to get a certificate of eligibility which will be issued by the Indian government when you will be completing the process of document verification.

Physical Standards

  • Everyone aspiring to qualify the process and become a government Engineer must undergo the medical examination required irrespective of reservation.
  • This medical examination is conducted at various railway hospitals, the list of which is attached below.
  • All the details related to venue, date, time etc will be uploaded on the official website of the Indian Railway.
  • For qualifying this round and medically eligible for UPSC Engineering Services, a candidate should be medically fit according to the physical standard set for the medical round of Indian Engineering Services.
